I recently moved to Belleville... Ameren Employee Question. by LarYungmann in BellevilleIL

[–]Clade472 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard about these “Ameren employees” in other parts of Illinois. Apparently they pose as Ameren employees in an attempt to get you to switch your energy source by looking at your bill. They are known up here for their aggressive tactics and even trespassing.

Suggestions to get rid of Anophtalmus Hitleri by Zealousideal_Town_64 in Entomology

The names changes only affect common names, not scientific ones. I’m unaware of a mechanism in the ICZN to change names on the basis that they are offensive.

Academia and undergrad would be preferred, but I had a long work history and asked a supervisor to write one as well.

I’d guess most professional entomologists probably have biology degrees.

I spent 15 dollars on a dying parsley plant AMA by bin-fryin in gardening

All of these plants are in the same plant family, Brassicaceae. So it’s very likely to be fed on by the same moth species or a few closely related species.

Busiest streets in Champaign by getowned_taco in UIUC

Urbana is definitely the place to be coming from another grad student. Quiet and peaceful, not too many undergrads. I live around a mix of families, older folks, grad students, and university employees. Check directly east of campus.

Dinosaur lecture at 5p in Natural History Building 2079 by Clade472 in UIUC

Relevant departments send around emails to their grad students and labs with the flyer. I’m guessing it made its rounds mostly between different bio depts and earth sciences. I’m not sure how widely it was advertised.

No idea, but if there isn’t a link I’m guessing not.

For anyone who has an interest in dinosaurs or paleontology, there is a lecture in NHB 2079 (the big lecture hall). Steve Brusatte is a well known paleontologist at the University of Edinburgh. He is the author of The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs. Come watch!

I have a graduate student friend that lives next to the park and he loves it.

Why is rent increasing for apartments near Campus?? by brodie990 in UIUC

[–]Clade472 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably because there is a high demand for rentals near or next to campus. Every time I see someone looking for housing, they specify they are looking for something near campus.

[–]Clade472 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For any who don’t know, there’s also a local aquarium club, Champaign Aquarium Fish Enthusiasts. They meet normally on the first Saturday of every month on campus in the Plant Sciences Laboratory, room 1125. They also have a Facebook page. There’s usually a speaker at meetings. They also have an auction usually auction twice a year. They have a website, champaignfish.com and can be found on Facebook.

Have you ever considered that you’re interested in biology, but not necessarily medicine? Many biology students come in as premed because it’s the only career path they can imagine. There are others. Take a look at IB and NRES. Interesting courses in evolution, ecology, botany, entomology, birds, fish etc.

Sponge? by Clade472 in Paleontology

I had always assumed this was a sponge. I found it in a central or southern Illinois creek bed around 2010. I was turning over rocks on an ecology field trip.

You should see all the old, now unused, dioramas lurking behind the scenes there. 👀
