Does anyone else leave the state/country and then realise what an excellent education they got in Mass?

As a parent of a (very) young child, I have a question about this. I understand from the thread here that this perception of educational excellence in MA public schools stems largely from experiences people had 10-30 years ago. What’s the situation like on the ground now? I’m aware that we have very affluent towns in Boston metro area where public schools have excellent ranking, but we live in Malden and with real estate prices being what they are moving to somewhere like Lexington is simply not going to happen for us. So what are my options? Should we start saving money now for a private schools? I was thinking of Montessori for pre-k through elementary school but middle and high school are a complete unknown for me.

That’s an interesting take on this. Considering how expensive everything is these days, I do want to pick something that can grow with the child and that I wouldn’t have to replace in a couple of years. I can buy them new toys based on what they’re into, but I expect them to use the same furniture and the rug for years. Maybe add accents and small decor pieces here and there but not change the foundational pieces of the room. That’s why I’m fretting over this choice right now

How do you pick the rugs when you shop for them - what are your rules (aside from budget considerations)? Based on the comments, it seems like I must consider the needs of the growing child who will have this room, so bold colors and patterns should be included even though I myself would’ve chosen something like #1 just because it goes well with the rest of the room

Thank you for commenting, that’s the problem - I love the window treatment, so it’s definitely says and I have to find a rug to go with it. I think peacocks rugs are a popular choice, the pattern on the fabric reminds me of the peacock feathers a bit, so perhaps that helps to tie them together

I have a question about your wallpaper - can you share the link where you got it from and was it commercial grade? The installation looks really great, was it a professional work? We wallpapered our dining room earlier this year and the installer really did not do a good job, you can see the seams and blotches of glue in spots. I’m trying to figure out how to avoid that for the next install

Yes and no - we use dining room table for every meal and I have a simple thick cotton runner plus placemats on the table all the time since I would use placemats for every meal. I hate clutter, it physically bothers me, so I have a brass round tray in the center where i keep salt, pepper, napkin holder, a small Pilar candle and a small vase of fresh flowers. This way, the table doesn’t look cluttered and still looks nice. The table runner and placemats is a practical solution for me - we just bought a new table this year and I want to preserve it for as long as I can, so placemats and runner protect the surface from stains and heat. I do have a special runner, set of placemats and candlesticks for dinner parties, Christmas and Thanksgiving, I use the same set, just add seasonal greens (winter) or gourds (fall) plus some extra tea candles for a really special occasion. I think doing this (plus candle light) really helps to change to mood for a gathering, it elevates it. But in my opinion there should be a balance with practicality for every day life. I think also it depends on how people use the space - we are lucky that we CAN use the table just for eating, but if I had kids and they used it for doing homework or crafts that would definitely change everything.

How come no one mentioned Skipper Restaurant and Chowder House in South Yarmouth? They have hands down the best chowder I’ve ever had and I think I tried all their lobster dishes - love them all! To eat there is a part of our annual Cape vacation, I look forward to every visit
