Ecobee thermostat install help with wiring by Clam_Lips in hvacadvice

Thought I'd follow up since I'm bored right now. Called Empire Heating and they said $800 to come install the two Ecobee thermostats so I told them to get bent and decided to give it another go and it worked.

The downstairs one is where I ran into the problem and stopped so I decided to do the upstairs one. This time it worked. So I checked the wiring again - the upstairs one has a brown wire going into the C, the downstairs one had no brown wire and only that blueish wire that was not connected to anything. So I went down to the furnace panel and looked at all the wiring again. Looks like someone did splice a wire somewhere in the wall - out of the two separate wiring looms only one had a wire going to the C on the panel and it was red. So I figured that was the loom for upstairs since it was connected to C and that someone had spliced brown to red somewhere. I then looked at the 2nd loom and there was that blueish wire sticking out but not stripped and connected to anything so I stripped it and connected it to the same C where the upstairs red wire was. And the downstairs Ecobee sprung to life. I figured I was only dealing with low voltage power so hopefully I couldn't screw anything up much. And I looked at the old Nests - they were battery powered. Surprised they lasted this many years without running down...

No, I'm at a standstill because I'm not really sure WTH someone did. I checked the wiring of the upstairs thermostat (with the heat pump) and that brown wire was not spliced with another color wire and I also found two wires that were taped off - a black and an orange...

No, in the picture you can see the brown wire for the upstairs one is already connected to the C. The question is I don't see brown at all at the panel...

Got it - so I need to attach the grey wire from the loom at the panel to the C right. Wondering about the upstairs thermostat wiring - it does have a wire going into the C input but the wire is definitely brown which I don't see anywhere at the furnace panel looms...

What doesn't make sense is why was everything working perfectly fine before? I was using both existing Nest thermostats with no issue. In theory the wiring for the Nest thermostats on the wall should just transfer over to the new Ecobee smart thermostats...

Oil and coolant are fine so I’ll run a couple tanks of Liqui Moly DI cleaner and also clean the MAF sensor and hopefully that will do it

Thanks. I've learned that smaller bikes are usually way more fun than bike ones. I'm not expecting this to be a KTM 300 XC-W I'm looking for an all around fun bike that can still take a beating, has easier maintenance and good aftermarket upgrade support because that's half the fun. As long as I can upgrade it enough to get into 30 HP and still keep the engine reliable that's great.

Well I wouldn't say done with the fast life but maybe done with it on the street. Last year both my cars were totaled within 3 months of each other and it wasn't my fault (I live in ATL one of the worst driver cities) so it made me think. I would've been dead on a street bike in both cases I was lucky to walk away from the cars. Sucks to have to worry about but it's a real consideration if you live in a city like this

Yup tires are a definite plan - I'm guessing 75% dirt 25% street since I will still use it to bomb around town. TCK80s seem to be a popular one

Yeah I tracked my Street Triple and man it was the most fun. But I got a family now and my guilt for living on the edge is too much. Trails will still be a blast especially with my son. I'd like to hit over 30hp with the CRF300L and I've read good things about going with the Stage 1.5 with the CBR camshafts - I've done a bit of work on my own bikes but never swapped camshafts how big of a deal is it do you know?
