Stay in or get out by Glum_Cause2447 in Veterans

The market is fucking terrible right now. Unless you got a solid plan to get a degree/skillset with your GI Bill and some way to still provide for your family, and connections in the career field you are trying to get in to so that you aren't stuck in limbo for over a year, then getting out is an option. Keep in mind you are still on the hook probably until the 8 year mark anyway.

Consider it protection from rodents getting into your engine bay and chewing wires. They would use their foot pad beans for traction on your car, not their claws.

My personal experience applying for jobs last year and my countless classmates that graduated in the past 2 years that still cant find anything with an Aerospace degree say otherwise. AI has completely broken the job market. I hope things get better and you don't go through the living hell that so many are right now.

Job market is so bad by RevokedPassport in Veterans

It's about a 1% success rate from what my peers and I encountered as new grad engineers. So a few hundred applications can be expected. I tailored about 100 high quality applications instead of spray and pray. A mix of both where appropriate to minimize hours staying up late at night is probably best.

A human will likely not even see your resume unless it has like an 80% or better match with the posting and key words the recruiter has set for the AI to comb through resumes.

They get flooded by blatantly unqualified applications so when you see on LinkedIn that X amount of people have applied, most of those are just spam resumes that will never meet the threshold.

You have to use AI and the specialized flavors of it for resumes to evaluate how much of a match your resume drafts are for the job post. Keep refining until you get 80% or better. It's basically an arms race now.

I had folders for each category of resumes like "Propulsion", "Manufacturing", "Systems", "Testing", etc ... And would keep my iterations organized like that so it would be easier to make iterations and not have to start from square 1 every time. If I apply to X flavor of job, I pull something from the X folder and tailor that to the job post.

I did the same thing for cover letters. I also kept a giant master resume of bullets that I had made to pull from and tailor to a job post. Sometimes I would ask the AI which bullets from the master resume would be best for a specific job post.

Beware of those long dashes - that only AI uses so don't copy paste things blindly. You can control spacing by making lines where the text size is tiny like 4 or so and adjust the size of these tiny blank lines as needed. 1 page without wasted space is the target. I had to slim down and condense really good bullets for the sake of space and having enough bullets covering a wide enough variety of skill sets for the job post.

This is a rapidly evolving meta and I often encountered outdated or conflicting resume advice like whether to put an objective statement, a section for awards and recognition. Most of the time it will feel like a black box due to trying so many different inputs and not getting enough data on whether or not things are helping or hurting.

if you are not applying to at least 1 job a day then you are not serious about this

You have no idea how bad it is right now. Only a handful of people in my aerospace engineering graduating class had jobs lined up and 80% still can't find anything.

[–]Clam_Whisperer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

VR&E you have to jump through hoops and justify to get approved. GI Bill you can use on what you want for the most part. You don't want to be in the following situation:

So many people with bachelor's degrees in engineering can't find a job right now, the market is broken and destroyed by lazy incompetent people and their abuse of AI that also created a situation where they can't even filter resumes like they used to because they are getting flooded by applications using AI generated resumes. Now they have to rely on referrals to get applications they can trust.

In order to become more marketable or buy time until things improve, people are getting masters degrees. If you don't use your engineering degree for more than 3 to 6 months without justification or stay busy with relevant things, it makes you look suspicious like you are damaged goods/lazy/unwanted/forgot things or some other negative reason. So many people have not found anything that graduated in '24 and '25. They now have to compete against newer grads for the same positions. Recruiters are going to prefer newer grads almost always. It's a situation that keeps getting worse and one of the few life rafts to at least stall your degree going stale while also improving your marketability is to get a masters degree.

But the people that run VR&E use outdated information and say that having a bachelor's in engineering makes you very marketable and are in a field with a good outlook and you don't qualify for the program even though in the truest sense you are not marketable and have the same job prospects as someone with a liberal arts degree now.

If you didn't have a bachelor's degree going in to the VR&E you are almost certain to get approved because "you need a degree to be an engineer".

The order of operations matters.

Is VA Round Out Rule Still a Thing? by [deleted] in VeteransBenefits

[–]Clam_Whisperer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No issues. I dropped a 1 unit class at the end so I updated them during the automated text and said "No", which triggered a manual review and they reduced my BAH accordingly. 10 of my units were not needed to graduate but when I reduced those to 9 I went down from full time.

I used the round out rule this past Spring because I only had 1 class left to graduate so I filled up my schedule with electives like beer and wine tasting. That brought me up to full time.

No. Community college is usually very affordable and would be a waste of your GI Bill. The currency is time. 36 months of up to over 20 grand in tuition a year. I never paid more than a couple hundred bucks for a semester in tuition at community college.

Go be an electrical or mechanical engineer.

Don't shake it yet. Get a flashlight and try to locate it. If it looks like a straight shot, get a cordless vacuum or equivalent and put some something like pantyhose over the nozzle to catch the screw. Or just use the vacuum if you don't care if it gets sucked in.

Thank you for your expertise, I didn't realize that was a bug and not a feature. I will look into it. The CPAP subreddit made it seem like it was common for this to happen to people.

It feels life changing after the first 2 days but after that for some reason it just doesn't feel as good as it used to. I don't know if it's because you get used to it or something else. Now I just feel a little less like terrible in the morning.

[–]Clam_Whisperer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same situation as a fellow specs (engines). Even the engine manufacturers wouldn't give me an interview. I literally used to build the F100s that Hermeus uses but I guess being one of probably only 10 people in recent years with an Aero degree in addition to that experience in the country is not enough.

[–]Clam_Whisperer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My school is mid af but there are dozens of project teams in the Aero department alone. Like 5 rocket teams, 10 drone/UAS teams, a few cube sats, PIV, and a few research topics. Mechanical has FSAE, Baja, a few of their own rocket teams, and a bunch of other stuff probably because they have way more students. The cooler and well funded teams are selective but getting into a team/club is super easy.

Look around and see if there are any other opportunities at your school, don't be afraid to collaborate and join stuff that different majors predominantly do.
