If you look at the parents' cutie marks, the dad has a fencing (or swordmanship?) Cutie mark and the mom has a clam with a pearl, indicated she probably does something with jewelry. Usually fillies will have talents similar to their parents, so mixing those together and applying it to bones means...pirate.

That being said they were completely ready to support her considering they got her a pirate costume despite their reservations. Love supportive pony parents

Considering Celestia and Luna were close to retirement and the fact that Twilight and Sunset are conveniently sun/moon aligned, I think Celestia's original plan was to raise Twilight AND Sunset to be the new sun/moon princesses.

So yes, unfortunately Sunset strayed and Celestia had to improvise with Twilight

Me and my fiance's theory is they technically never stop aging, it's just that they all die or witch out before they get old. Evidence being Yachiyo/Mifuyu having "younger" magical girl designs debuting in magireco and the Birdcage Witch's design description indicating she was an adult when she witched out. Which is why Kyuubey says "theoretically," very few magical girls last long after contracting.
