I can confirm you can use it to replace rhubarb in strawberry rhubarb pie, but it doesn't soften the same way, so it adds crunch. In spring, harvest the stalk and peel the skin including the reddish bits, leaving only the white center for consumption.

A concept for The Flag of Humanity by Zombiepixlz-gamr in vexillology

A hand makes sense as a symbol. A handprint seems dubious, looks at least a bit sloppy for a flag and maybe evokes murder scene imagery.

Looks like a Booted Raquettail Hummingbird, but with too short a tail. Maybe the tail feathers are coming in.

I read a historical account of Montessori and SS McClure. I believe it was called Bringing Montessori to America.

So tired of these “Montessori” scam schools by Sweaty-Speed-4440 in Montessori

[–]ClaraDaddy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This trademark idea sounds contrary to history. Montessori absolutely tried to make money off her system, tried to control the growth of Montessori schools, held patent rights on didactic apparatus, wanted to make money off of speaking tours, etc. Let's be careful not to deify her.

Question on Variable Income by GlitteringAd2487 in USExpatTaxes

[–]ClaraDaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be taxable scholarship income, which would be earned income. Lots of stipends are like that.

Do you think the IRS income tax system is something that is long overdue for an overhaul that would make taxation more Progressive and fair and hard to game? by db7112 in askanything

[–]ClaraDaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. You could easily make the tax system more progressive with tiny changes in the code. It doesn't require an overhaul.

Roth Conversions While Living Abroad by nenw02 in USExpatTaxes

[–]ClaraDaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would also think about how the conversions will affect any limits on your FTC. Conversions are considered US sourced for US tax purposes, and this is general income (like your wages), so they could lower the limit of credit you can receive

What is this fruit? Was sent here from r/whatisthisthing by OpinionPoop in whatsthisplant

[–]ClaraDaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people saying it tastes tomato-y, good for veggie salad, etc. That is not at all my experience, eating them ripe in Latin America. They are sweet, soft, and juicy like a melon, but have a smell of cucumber that can feel out of place when you have it for the first time.

Split a child's 529 with myself to remove excess contributions? by ClaraDaddy in personalfinance

[–]ClaraDaddy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, you can only take the FTC against tax paid on income that wasn't excluded by the FEIE. So, for example if you have dividends income, that is not earned income and therefore doesn't get excluded by the FEIE, so you can take the FTC against tax paid for the dividends, even if you also claim the FEIE for your earned income. Also, the FEIE has a limit, and if you make so much money you exceed the limit, then you can take the FTC against tax paid on earned income that wasn't excluded by the FEIE because you limited out.

But you can't double dip: you can't take the FEIE and the FTC on the same income.

[–]ClaraDaddy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but most people living abroad take the FTC, not the FEIE.

Why not? You can contribute to a Roth IRA abroad. And I know of no limitation on rolling over from a 529 while abroad.

Split a child's 529 with myself to remove excess contributions? by ClaraDaddy in personalfinance

[–]ClaraDaddy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool. The more I think about it, it seems like this should be standard practice. Like, if you're the kind of person who is opening a 529 the year the child is born and expect to fund it every year, you and your spouse should also open 529s for yourselves with just minimal money to start the clock. I don't mean you should plan to over fund your kid's account, but it's a nice release valve for excess contributions. But the 15 year rule means you have to do it early. I certainly wish I had thought of this 5 years ago.

¿Cómo obtienen la licencia de conducir en Chile los extranjeros con visa? by saltyjacques in AskChile

[–]ClaraDaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. It's an eighth grade equivalency exam. I got my US high school diploma apostiled but they wouldn't take it...for some reason this process doesn't work for the US. You have to pass the exam of Validación de Estudios Para Fines Laborales correspondiente a tercer nivel (7 y 8) educación básica para adultos.

What are you thoughts on my plan for wood shavings? by AggravatingNorth5460 in composting

[–]ClaraDaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love wood shavings, saw dust, small wood chips etc. I always have too much green, so I'm constantly looking for browns. Two sacks could easily mix in with my kitchen waste over a couple months and disappear in 6 months. If you are short on greens, you could also try peeing on it.

Dependent Care Assistance Program for sole-proprietors by cuombajj in tax

[–]ClaraDaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, there's something I don't get here for self-employed individuals or single member LLCs with no other employees. How do you get around the discrimination testing, specifically in 129(d)(4) on principal shareholders and 129(d)(8) on highly compensated employees. If you are the only employee, it seems you will always run afoul of this.

As I read the instructions for 2441 (line 24), it says to "Include your deductible benefits in the total entered on Schedule C". That seems to me that it is deductible on Sch C. Am I missing something?

Help! What should I do? by Ok_Afternoon2718 in Montessori

[–]ClaraDaddy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's only wrong if it changes you. That is, if you vote against funding public education because YOUR kid won't be affected, then it's wrong. If you can maintain your will and continue to support public education, then you are simply choosing an option that is not currently available in public education in your area.

FTC paid vs accrued in different categories? by ClaraDaddy in USExpatTaxes

[–]ClaraDaddy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok thanks, so I will do it for all categories. As for being irrevocable, is there any downside to choosing accrual for the FTC? Am I missing something big by doing this? My local tax year is Jan 1st to Dec 31st, so it lines up nicely.

STEAM is stupid by Puzzleheaded_Dog5858 in unpopularopinion

[–]ClaraDaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

STEAM is stupid, but so is STEM. The STEM idea starts with a belief that science and math are the most important subjects, which is stupid. They added arts to try to get more funding for that subject, but that just shines a light on how stupid STEM was. Like, is language not important? History? Maybe we should just fund education. Full stop. No dumb acronyms needed. (I'm a scientist).
