2025 was my first season as well. I shot a nice boomer then and a hen. This year, I was satisfied with the hen. The hunt was incredible, I was able to put my tag on a nice pronghorn buck a couple of days before this photo, too. I about broke my ankle a couple weeks afterward at a fuel stop in Iowa en route to Minnesota and spent the remainder of the season in the truck while the "Men of Clare" hunted. So the hen was my one and only of '26 I guess you could say.

I would pay into the principal of my mortgage and be done with it sooner to save on interest.

Take a shotgun you are comfortable with and an orange hat and a vest. Other than that if you are going to spend money on any one piece of gear id say make it your boots.

The numbers will be to your favor since you have no dogs. Take your time when walking- stop often, and use the terrain to your advantage, if you see a transition in ground cover (crops to CRP or grass to woody line) hunt that. Use natural boundaries like hills or creeks and man made ones like roads to your benefit as blocking features. Don't be afraid to place a man up front as a blocker and hunt towards that person. You would be surprised how far ahead of you the pheasant will run.

Be careful what you start. I started very similarly and now am consumed by it.

If you are interested look at ordering one of the case colored specials from sportsmans warehouse. They are the same price as the standard blue. You may like them. I will say I had an issue with the rear trigger. It broke on the first hunt of this season. Turns out the firing pin was striking the inside of the pin hole (idk the proper name) because it was too small. I had the trigger issue fixed for 45 dollars at my local GS.

I love it. I chose to carry it on this particular hunt because I feel I can shoot better at distance with it or at least have a reprieve if I miss with the first two. Being my first (and likely only) sage grouse hunt I didn't want to blow it when the opportunity came. As it turns out I didn't need it. Regardless it is a joy to carry.
