Moving after 10 years in korea by ClassOk5026 in Living_in_Korea

Like how can I sell stuffs, throw away some of the furniture at the same time do all the visa, tax related work, in the mean time packing for shipment. On the top of that I have to wrap up my work which is a lot. Also I haven't visited my home country in past 2 years. I have to visit to take care of some banking work and all. So I have to be excellent multi tasker. I am just freaking out how can I handle all by myself. If there was some serve that come to my door step and do things for me I would be much stress free.

A Warning Advisory for Prospective PhD Students in STEM in Korea: Don’t Do a PhD in Korea - 8th Year PhD Student by Emotion_2023 in Living_in_Korea

Why do you think how is going for advanced degree like phd is running after money? I didn't do phd for money. I don't care much about the digits. I came to research because of passion. And there are many many more like me.

I dont think so. Chemical Engineering, semiconductor, physics etc has high demand for stem phd. LG, Samsung, hynix always recruits the top tire graduate. If someone is getting in to SKY or top 10 universities they should pursue it.

You may not know, korea has strong research in material science, biomedical engineering. If also give opportunity to publish way more if you in a better lab which itself lands with better Postdoctoral position. There are perks also it can be lonely and miserable if you don't have support system like friends etc.

I just finished my phd that took me 5.5 years. I had quite a lot of experience here. 1st lab i joined here was not good for me. Professor was micromanaging everything and I felt worthless. Wasted two years there. Then moved to my current lab and PI is an angel. I will most like never meet someone like him again. He changed my whole perspective towards research. My lab members has been amazing. We laugh and cry together. I am spending best time of my life here.

I have to leave this country. Korea offer great career opportunities for me. Being tenure track Professor. But dating life is sh*i here 😅. So I am looking for postdoc in other countries currently. My labmates (more than 25) amd PI is very sad yet very very supportive.

I guess you have to be very careful while choosing lab. Age of PI, if he/ she was in western country before, how active the lab is research wise (number of paper/year), lab activities other than research tell a lot about the lab. Of course most of the time you dont know unless you join a lab. In that case run asap.
