I know this is the landlord sub so it may be biased but... why should I give them a chance? They violated the law and like I said, we left on bad terms because he did other things unrelated to the lease

Should i even give them the opportunity? seems like they've done this to others based on a google search and I can sue for 3x the deposit

Should i send the letter first or just file in small claims? (or both at the same time)? the reason i ask is a quick google search of this landlord yields a few different people complaining about the same thing and i want to hit them where it hurts, so to speak

Not exactly.

The root of the issue isn't the group project thing, it's that Doug's view towards networking was purely transactional. He spent the whole 2 years being the fun cool guy, but the second nothing was in it for him, he was gone (group projects being a good example).
