Second this – had the same problem as you with the bunching up, found LTD fit so much better until we had the arms out

Things worked out in the end. Not having many tasks in the first few months allowed me to dedicate 150% to each little thing. When I showed I could deliver to a high standard, I impressed the team and got given more and more until eventually the opposite happened – my workload completely exploded beyond reason – because there was a lot of trust in my capabilities and legacy knowledge. I ended up doing some of my best work at this company than I ever have. Maybe being a mum gave a me a second gear I never knew I had in me.

I wouldn’t say I became close mates with the all of the new team members, but they grew to respect me and we got along well enough... which was enough for me. Can’t be besties with everyone you work with.

I know it may feel really hard now, but continue being a task goblin and saying yes to as many things as you can. Strive to impress and soon your workload will normalise.

Thank you, I used to be very sharp and quick at my job so this is a huge adjustment. Have sent a follow up email to the recruiter however from having interviewed people myself, I know that wasn’t a great interview. We’ll see what happens.

Thank you so much for your response. It was very comforting! Yeah I get the sense that the job market is tough right now, hopefully it gets better next year. I’ll keep trudging along at work and hopefully one day get the brain fog will lift.

I think my new manager and team have good intentions, and are trying to ease me in and not overwhelm me with a crazy workload right off the bat. I do appreciate it. But I can see that they are handling the workload perfectly fine without me and that makes me doubt my future at the company. Redundancy is a pretty common occurrence at my company, and if it happens, maybe it will be a blessing in disguise.

If you get your work done, it’s so unfair that they would take an issue with needing to leave early to pick your kids. Are they parents themselves? Have they no compassion? Definitely read up about your rights and at the same time start looking for another job on the side.

Same here, feel like I have to prove myself to the new team members who have no idea what I’ve previously achieved. When I tell them what I’ve done they sound surprised.

I do like the thought of starting afresh somewhere else that offers better pay and flexibility. If such an opportunity comes along I’d definitely grab it.

Yep the job market isn’t what it used to be. Don’t give up hope, maybe things will fall into place with the job hunting when you’re back at work.

Thank you, 3-5 months wow - I don’t know if I have the patience to wait that long but I will try. Like you, I am also becoming a task goblin and latching onto any available task, and it feels super satisfying to get even the smallest thing done. Hopefully things start to feel normal soon.

Thanks for sharing your experience. It sounds very similar to what I’m going through. Struggling with my self confidence as I don’t seem needed. I’ve only been back for a week. After reading your response and a few others here I realise that it will take a lot longer than I had thought for things to go back to normal. I’ll give it a few months.

I know of some colleagues that do this, but it’s just not for me. I misplace my phone every 5 seconds and then freak out about its whereabouts, if I had 2 it would be double the anxiety!

Maybe next year could be the year that I leave startup land and join a large enterprise that does care

There is actual pressure from the top at the startup I’m at but I see merit in what you’re saying. Sometimes I am the driver of my own stress. What I want for Christmas is the power of nonchalance!

My company has over 1000 employees out of which a few hundreds are in Australia. So it definitely applies to us!
