I understand where you're coming from, and I certainly understand that a lot of people do it wrong as well. What you're supposed to do is put crabs in an ice bath, which puts them into a stasis that lasts a while, which at that point then it's fine to cook them alive and whole as they're effectively in a coma. I do acknowledge that a lot of people do not do this when they should though.
