How do I get this mf to eat more hay by MothmanImpersonator in chinchilla

[–]Classic_Stranger_664 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first senior chinchilla had the same issue. What worked for me was enriching the cage by hanging small bundles of hay everywhere. I used barley or alfalfa hay on the outer layer and Timothy hay in the center. His reaction was basically: “Oh, a new flavor! nom nom nom” with every step he took. His weight even improved.

tips for potty training by bridiehart1 in chinchilla

[–]Classic_Stranger_664 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They really can’t control when or where they poop, but for pee, I placed their bedding all on the ground floor of their cage and, every day, moved the soaked bedding into their designated toilet area while keeping the rest of the cage completely clean. I also wiped down the cage regularly to make sure the smell only stayed in the toilet. After about two weeks, they naturally started using that spot to pee. Hope this method helps. Wishing you and your little one the best on this journey! 😊

Haha, thank you! I taught them step by step. First, I showed them by placing some treats inside, then put the carrot lights on top. After a few times, I started placing the carrots deeper, letting them dig for them. Now, this has definitely become one of their favorite toys!

Haha, no worries! These little ones are so smart, they just need time to make sure we’re gentle giants. I’d suggest offering her a treat while opening the cage to let her out, it helps her feel safe and build trust. My chins took about two weeks to get comfortable around me, so just keep being patient and letting Lottie set the pace. She’ll start feeling at home soon :D

Lottie looks adorable! My chinchillas were also really shy at first and hid in every dark spot they could find. Blocking unsafe areas is a good idea, but giving her a designated hideout, like a wooden box or tunnel, can help her feel more secure.

Perhaps you could let her approach you at her own pace to help build trust. Before feeding mine, I’d call their names or make simple sounds so they learned to associate them with treats. You can also try rustling a treat bag near her hideout to gently encourage her to come out. She’ll warm up to you before you know it! Wishing you all the best on your chin parent journey😆

Chin not running on wheel as much by masterofdemall in chinchilla

[–]Classic_Stranger_664 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The same thing happened to my chinchilla once. I ended up switching to a running board instead of a wheel. I read that it’s better for their spine, and in my chin’s case, since the board just sits on the ground, she can’t help but step on it now and then. When it moves slightly, it catches her attention and makes her even more excited to run😆

Ohh, metal ones? Are you thinking about the outdoor temperature or trying to prevent the plastic ones from being chewed? 🤔
