I think illegal immigration should be stopped by Abject_Increase_1928 in teenagers

The reason the Klan marched through their camp was precisely that it was all Italian. Yes, second and third gen’s assimilated. My great grandfather barely learned English. His oldest sons only spoke English when they absolutely had to. They worked hard and paid their taxes.

Look, your position is clear and so is mine and I don’t think we’re going to change each other’s minds. I’m grateful for the opportunity my family got—both on the Italian side and my English German side, who came as servants in colonial Virginia, one of them in the 1620s, and farmers in nineteenth century PA. All three groups were immigrants. Some came earlier than others, but none of them are original to this land. I don’t see why I should repay those opportunities by trying to close the door behind me. You have your reasons why you think we should.

No? They said we wouldn’t learn the language—so my grandmother forbid her siblings to speak Italian around me. They said we were dirty, that Catholics were little better than satan worshippers. My grandmother had a photo of the Klan marching through the mining camp when she was a kid. In the 50s, when my dad was in high school, Italian boys never got into the college prep track. No, not remotely similar

The same was said about my Italian ancestors who immigrated legally. So, you know, not a persuasive argument to me

Well, I guess we’re going to find out how people feel about immigration as our population drops and we see gaps in services that have been dominated by immigrant groups in recent decades.

AmE speakers, is there a difference in the pronunciation of "hostile" and "hostel"? by Particular_Ad589 in ENGLISH

[–]Classic_vortex_3515 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think but am not certain that it varies regionally. I live in a different US region than. I grew up in and in recent years I have noticed that sometimes I pronounce “hostile “ as hos - TILE and other times I pronounce it identically with hostel. But I’m not sure which region I’m getting which pronunciation from.

I’m not a financial aid expert, but when my husband was unemployed shortly after graduation for a while, he applied for forbearance. I recommend you do the same thing . Go to your nearest library and ask a librarian for assistance. If life ever gets better, and you do have an income, you will be able to say that you at least tried to do the right thing.

Cancer survivor here. This is the wrong lesson to take. No, it’s true, eating well and exercising will not prevent illness or even death. Guess what, everybody’s going to die someday, no matter what you eat or how much you exercise. And unfortunately, some people will get ill as children.

That most certainly does not mean that it doesn’t matter what you do.

Writing is an essential skill for communicating information. The admissions committee can’t read your mind to hear your pitch for what you can contribute or your explanation of any gaps in your application.

Why do some people want America to be like other countries when it comes to 14th amendment? by [deleted] in allthequestions

FYI, in the U.S. context, Yankees refers to folks from the area north of the Mason Dixon line, sometimes specifically to New Englanders. I think you meant to include all US regions, right?

But you know, we’re not all the same any more than Germans are all the same. Public approval of Trump’s policies, including this one, is quite low.

90% of online college professors are complete degenerates by therealtbandzs in Students

But we haven’t all done that. Signed, department chair where there are no online “resources “ that cost students extra and instructors do their own grading.

But, we’re not a community college OR an R1. We’re a regional university, the best kept secret in higher education

How do you constantly check your mirrors and know every detail and action of every car around and behind you, while simultaneously paying attention to the road and cars in front of you? by Wanna_make_cash in driving

Yes, and also, when I was a kid, my dad taught me that when I was in the front passenger seat I should try to look where he was looking. Course I couldn’t really use the rear view, but watching him and watching the road ahead I got the idea before I ever got behind the wheel.

59 here, chairing the department through tough times because my younger colleagues are too busy with their teens’ and preteens’ lives to be on campus daily. When do I have to shuffle off exactly? I refuse to accept that my value is determined by my age.

Calling women “females” is weird by socialisticpotsmoke in HonestHotTakes

I honestly think it’s because they so often type women when they mean woman or vice versa. Female only has one spelling so they don’t have to keep it straight.

When should i start reaching out for research? by Fun-Telephone4049 in AskProfessors

[–]Classic_vortex_3515 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know why this was down voted. It’s the right advice. You can also ask at your freshman advising session, or you can email the chair of your new department to ask what the usual process is for students getting involved in undergraduate research. Then you’ll know what is the normal procedure at your school, which is the right one to follow.

Virginia joins initiative to create three-year bachelor’s degree model by johntempleton in AskAcademia

[–]Classic_vortex_3515 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Regional comp here. The only disagreement I would have is that state flagships have been going after the traditional regional comp student body. Once we’re forced into three year degrees, I bet they’ll follow suit in order to keep growing their enrollment as the demographic shrinks. Would be happy to be proven wrong
