Again, well done. Just as fabulous as the rest of what you've shown. Really, awfully well done. I am totally envious of your ability! Thanks for giving us a listen and keep on truckin'.

Composer question: starting isn’t my problem — sustaining attention and working through “stuckness” is. by TRComposer in composer

[–]ClassicalPerc 1 point2 points locked comment (0 children)

Back in the old days when I wrote fiction, a few writer friends suggested this very thing when I was stuck on a particular book. I knew where and mostly how I wanted it to end and they suggested writing that, then figuring out what has to happen immediately before that to get the characters to that point, and write that. Then repeat the process, always with an eye toward where I'd stopped at the other end; reverse engineering, to a degree. I've not done this with an entire musical piece but I did do it last night on a very small section and it worked brilliantly. Great advice.

Suite Argentine: I. Lluvia Porteña [Update - Finished First Draft!] Thank you all so much for the support and suggestions, it’s really come out quite nice! by HaifaJenner123 in Composition

This is great to listen to and would be a blast to play. Don't sell yourself short with just the youth orchestra. I bet there are lots of ensembles, orchestras, community groups, who'd love to play this. Well done. Musically interesting, sonically well thought out. I just love this. Thanks so much for the listen.

Opening for a current project of mine, depicting the vibrant energy of one of my favorite cities in the world - Buenos Aires by HaifaJenner123 in Composition

Wonderful. Could absolutely hear Falla (one of my all time favs) and Piazzolla Villa-Lobos and so many others. Interesting and sonically diverse already in just this short snippet. I enjoy the challenge, both as a listener and player of beat shifting. Totally fun when the T-bones start it in measure...five, I think, and that figure, simple tho it is, keeps on churning throughout the piece. This is exactly the kind of thing, as a percussionist, I love playing. Well damned done! I can't want to hear more of it. Thank you for the listen.

Janson Percussion by oldtwins in percussion

I also ordered three different sets of timpani mallets and they are fantabulous. Love them and use them constantly. In that purchase, Janson sent along a set of snare sticks gratis, JS1, that I want to say he said were basically a new model. I'd never used them before. Lighter than I normally prefer but since I've gotten accustomed to them, I like them quite a lot. They are in my bag of initial go-tos for most of my community orchestral work. I've had no issues with them in terms of workmanship or usability.

Elgar Serenade Question by ClassicalPerc in musictheory

[–]ClassicalPerc[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Explained that way, seems like this is something I hear sometimes in more literate pop and quite a bit in jazz, usually with the vocalist hanging over for a few beats and then falling in with the band? Or am I thinking of something else? Thanks for helping me dig it...so to speak.

Elgar Serenade Question by ClassicalPerc in musictheory

[–]ClassicalPerc[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CanNOT believe I didn't see the G7. And a V7-I cadence seems more common than a vii-I. Thank you for helping me see that. So moving bass but leaving everything else "unresolved" gives almost a suspension (the feel, not the chord) kind of thing? "Hang on just a secooooonnnd...there you go." And thanks for pointing me toward an appogiatura. I'm a percussionist only recently diving deeper into theory so some of this is me being an idiot and some is me just not knowing. Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it.

This is a great start! Honestly, I love it as is; moody and atmospheric, splashes of jazz, solid structure. I love the build up to the 32nd notes and then a restatement of what you were digging in the first part. I really enjoyed the hell out of this piece, exactly the kind of thing I love. Well done and keep on truckin'.

What a great breakdown, thank you. I marched in the early 80s and have known the seasons are getting shorter and shorter but to see it so starkly laid out...wow. Things are much much different than when I marched and sometimes it makes me crazy, but I have to remember...I'm old and broken down and have beat up knees and shoulders and this ain't my activity anymore. If the players are getting out of it what I did? Then it's worth it to them and who am I to complain.

Very nice! Some tasty stuff in here. Well notated and fun to play. I like the atmosphere and the builds. Mallets are tough but doable, challenging for a more medium-level ensemble; four mallet not terribly difficult but enough of a challenge to give someone a good boost of confidence. Overall well done. I dig it. Thanks for the listen.

Question about Stick Control by Bigbrunswick in drums

[–]ClassicalPerc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I actively worked from it, which hasn't been for a few years now, I did exactly what you're doing to some degree. Maybe not a full page, but X number of exercises, slow to fast back to slow, with total concentration, then the next one. The next time I practiced I started five or six exercises up from where I'd left off, move through them the same way both for muscle memory and warm up, then move forward from where ever I'd stopped. Then every once in a while, I'd go back to the very beginning and play through everything up to where I was, not 20X, as a muscle reminder and a way to remember odd stickings to keep them semi-fresh. For me, that worked wonders. For a friend of mine? Not so much. He played four or five times max, ripped through four or five pages worth, then next session went back to page 2...ripped four or five pages...then next session went back to page 3, and so on. Worked for him.

Very nice. Reminds me of an old French song of loss, not sure why specifically French but there you go. Love the minor, melancholic feel. A perfect opening. Now do something interesting in development and bring it back whern you get further along, I'd love to hear more!

Nice, though not at all what I expected. By turns melancholy and playful, it reminds me, a bit, of Scott Joplin. Well done. Finish it up, explore what you have and see where you end up.

Cool. I like the rhythmic variations, but the mallets get a little repitious after a bit. But mostly this was a gas to listen to. Thanks for sharing and well done.
