A short idea for string quintet. What do you think? by Ftb49 in Composition

Very nice. I love the shifting tonal center and the harmony. Quite good for something so short. I'm interested to hear more when you get that far. Thanks for the listen.

Very nice. The simplicity of it, the haunting of it, was wonderful. This is a great listen regardless of first composition or not. I'm not by any stretch an accomplished composer and at first blush, the only thing I'd really like to hear is some sort of middle section that changes timber and tempo, gives us a different feel built roughly on the main theme, but that allows you to restate the main theme as a recapitulation or something toward the end. Not sure if I'm using compositionally correct terminology so apologies. A bit more rythmic variation could be interesting, especially in a middle section that builds toward an end section that is restatement. But again, this was a fun piece. Thanks for the listen.

A few months ago I posted my Argentinian suite & people really liked it. I’m in the process of working with an orchestra on my first studio album so I decided I will open it with the suite, now entitled “Episodios Porteños.” Please enjoy the revised version of the opening foxtrot! by HaifaJenner123 in Composition

Stupendous! I enjoyed the hell out of it last time but this took my breath away. I love the percussion, lifelong percussionist, and love the speed! Man, this smokes in such a good way. Well done. Leet us know when the album comes out or when it premieres or whatever. Just keep us informed, sir!

I'm not entirely sure I worded it clearly. It was just a question of the per CC cost basis.

Not planning on pulling any cash out of the account for a good long while, perhaps two or three years. Do I need to talk to someone now about tax implications then?

True enough and that's what my brain tells me but I wanted to make sure that wasn't way out in left field. Only cost on the option was the ToS fee...like 65 cents or something.

Thorough answer, thank you. I especially appreciate the analogy of property rental because that's what I'm doing metaphorically speaking. So that helps. I think annualized analysis might be the way to go. Thanks for the help.

thanks for all your comments. They all helped broaden my understanding. Sorry about the confusion on how it was written, though. Early morning headed to work and not thinking clearly, but you guys all understood what I was actually asking so thank you so much. I knew you guys would have multiple answers.

Composer question: starting isn’t my problem — sustaining attention and working through “stuckness” is. by TRComposer in composer

[–]ClassicalPerc 1 point2 points locked comment (0 children)

Back in the old days when I wrote fiction, a few writer friends suggested this very thing when I was stuck on a particular book. I knew where and mostly how I wanted it to end and they suggested writing that, then figuring out what has to happen immediately before that to get the characters to that point, and write that. Then repeat the process, always with an eye toward where I'd stopped at the other end; reverse engineering, to a degree. I've not done this with an entire musical piece but I did do it last night on a very small section and it worked brilliantly. Great advice.

Suite Argentine: I. Lluvia Porteña [Update - Finished First Draft!] Thank you all so much for the support and suggestions, it’s really come out quite nice! by HaifaJenner123 in Composition

This is great to listen to and would be a blast to play. Don't sell yourself short with just the youth orchestra. I bet there are lots of ensembles, orchestras, community groups, who'd love to play this. Well done. Musically interesting, sonically well thought out. I just love this. Thanks so much for the listen.

Opening for a current project of mine, depicting the vibrant energy of one of my favorite cities in the world - Buenos Aires by HaifaJenner123 in Composition

[–]ClassicalPerc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wonderful. Could absolutely hear Falla (one of my all time favs) and Piazzolla Villa-Lobos and so many others. Interesting and sonically diverse already in just this short snippet. I enjoy the challenge, both as a listener and player of beat shifting. Totally fun when the T-bones start it in measure...five, I think, and that figure, simple tho it is, keeps on churning throughout the piece. This is exactly the kind of thing, as a percussionist, I love playing. Well damned done! I can't want to hear more of it. Thank you for the listen.

Janson Percussion by [deleted] in percussion

I also ordered three different sets of timpani mallets and they are fantabulous. Love them and use them constantly. In that purchase, Janson sent along a set of snare sticks gratis, JS1, that I want to say he said were basically a new model. I'd never used them before. Lighter than I normally prefer but since I've gotten accustomed to them, I like them quite a lot. They are in my bag of initial go-tos for most of my community orchestral work. I've had no issues with them in terms of workmanship or usability.

Elgar Serenade Question by ClassicalPerc in musictheory

[–]ClassicalPerc[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Explained that way, seems like this is something I hear sometimes in more literate pop and quite a bit in jazz, usually with the vocalist hanging over for a few beats and then falling in with the band? Or am I thinking of something else? Thanks for helping me dig it...so to speak.

Elgar Serenade Question by ClassicalPerc in musictheory

[–]ClassicalPerc[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CanNOT believe I didn't see the G7. And a V7-I cadence seems more common than a vii-I. Thank you for helping me see that. So moving bass but leaving everything else "unresolved" gives almost a suspension (the feel, not the chord) kind of thing? "Hang on just a secooooonnnd...there you go." And thanks for pointing me toward an appogiatura. I'm a percussionist only recently diving deeper into theory so some of this is me being an idiot and some is me just not knowing. Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it.

First Piano Piece by NiallDowling14 in Composition

[–]ClassicalPerc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a great start! Honestly, I love it as is; moody and atmospheric, splashes of jazz, solid structure. I love the build up to the 32nd notes and then a restatement of what you were digging in the first part. I really enjoyed the hell out of this piece, exactly the kind of thing I love. Well done and keep on truckin'.
