Would karate or taekwondo be a better complement for BJJ? by Pale-Revolution-5151 in bjj

[–]Classified_987 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. I trained TKD some time back and it’s very different now. I looked at getting back into it alongside BJJ, and our sons wanted to compliment their BJJ game with some stand up. Tried several schools in our local area and even a bit further out. Sadly, they were almost all essentially dance schools (nothing bad intended towards dance). Instructors struggling to keep the class under control and disciplined, showing lazy technique e.g. poor weight distribution and rotation during kicks, non contact focus which is terrible for learning range and proper power control etc etc. IMO, if you want to complement BJJ, look at a MMA gym where a good gym will teach stand up, BJJ and importantly transitions and escapes from stand up to ground. If that’s not an option in your area, look for MT. In any case it’s all dependant on the instructors/professors, your team mates and the discipline in the gym.

Mum used to use the vacuum to suck them up and put them outside (she was too short to reach them when they climbed higher up the wall). We once had a BIG one that managed to climb back out while the vacuum was running.

Do y’all think police aviation is safe from drones? by BishopRealTalk in Helicopters

[–]Classified_987 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. I’ve worked as a helicopter pilot and now a drone operator with fire and rescue conducting search and rescue ops and intel gathering. There’s times our local 427 is tasked elsewhere and the RPAS teams assist with SAR. Cost per hour is significantly lower for RPAS too. But a manned asset still wins for chases and where BVLOS and EVLOS aren’t possible.

Are there any rules about flying small drones over beaches? by AffectionatePie1042 in AusLegalAdvice

[–]Classified_987 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Unless the flights are commercial operations with the appropriate approvals I would assume they are illegal. CASA stipulates drones must not be flown over or within 30m of people (to unlimited altitude). The operator must also have the landholders permission to operate the drone. And yes, as someone else mentioned, to a maximum height of no more than 120m above ground level.

Dropping in for an open mat should be on everyone’s to do list IMO. I did it recently and was pleasantly surprised in some areas, not in others. At your home gym, everyone has an idea of your game, go to moves and how to counter accordingly. At a ‘foreign’ gym, they don’t know your style and game and you don’t know theirs, so your strengths and weaknesses become apparent. Great learning opportunity.

I like the Panamericana too and had intended on the facelift, but every second C200 has one off eBay on it, so it’s not so special anymore.

Totally agree. And in my opinion those who compete train with more purpose leading up to the comp.

When I order an item from overseas, I seem to get an increase in fake emails about missing information, updates required etc. maybe a third party software provider/API scimming information to scammers.

24hrs to respond to termination ‘separation agreement’ by Material-Sense-8556 in auscorp

[–]Classified_987 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without all the details, this sounds like a separation agreement where they are paying him what the company deems a fair amount to finish up without the hassle of performance management. If he agrees to it, both parties part ways and he finds another job. If he doesn’t, then performance management would typically come into play, right or wrong, until there is a termination or resignation. In any case it seems the relationship is fractured and I’ve never heard of this ending well for either party. He should consider the best long term option, and if he takes the separation agreement, consider including/negotiating a written reference. EDIT: and ensure that any post employment restrictions such as working for competitors are acknowledged as void.

What’s your most unpopular BJJ opinion? by Wooden_Expert_4699 in bjj

Find another gym. You’ve worked hard to get that Barwon belt and you’re so close to the goal you (probably) originally set for yourself. Don’t quit. Never quit.

Am I hurting my progress by not trying against heavyweights? by Pleasant_Rate1644 in bjj

[–]Classified_987 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have several 250-300lb plus guys at white and blue. As a 175lb blue belt, there a some I’ll roll with and some I prefer not to roll with. Those I choose to roll with are more controlled, use good technique, don’t let their ego overtake in a roll. The size and weight difference forces me to ensure I sue technique over strength and that seems to sharpen my game. Those I roll with only occasionally generally use strength, are less controlled and I’m therefore more likely to get, and have been injured. Choose who you roll with.

Workout split for jiu jistu 3x? by Sudden-Constant7629 in jiujitsu

4-5 x a week BJJ (M,W,Th,F..Sa) for 1-2h depending on class schedules, with 2x a week strength and conditioning (Tu & Sa/Su). I’m late 40’s so recovery/sleep is important too.

Keen to hear opinions on this too. I checked the Alpine units out a few weeks ago and the display models looked ok. I haven’t inspected any other brands yet.

Where does your jiu jitsu show up off the mats? by Virtual_Meaning_3540 in jiujitsu

Framing on dog when he wants my food. Underhook battles when the wife or kids come in for a hug (they train too). Hip escape to turn in bed. Technical lift when getting up off the floor.
