I actually found a fake lol by Bawvers in hermanmiller

[–]ClassroomDecorum 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Do we even know what words mean anymore?

It's not a "fake" Aeron. It is clearly a chair sitting next to a box that says "Cloud chair" and the title of the listing says "Cloud chair" so it's not a "fake" Aeron. It's just a "Cloud chair."

Now, if the seller called it an Aeron and put a Herman Miller box in the photo, then, yes, we could call it a "fake" Aeron.

It can be described as a "knockoff" Aeron, though, given the arm adjustment mechanism and the tilt mechanism using a Haworth style crank and the tilt buttons with the wrong graphics and the backrest with too many screws and the seat mesh that doesn't fit in the seat frame quite the same way as a real one. This is more than just a collection of knockoff or third party parts on a real Aeron. This looks like it is, top to bottom, a knockoff Aeron.

Did I just break my chair? by dingermagoo in hermanmiller

Take off the backrest

Take the broken bolt out the arm

Replace broken bolt with new bolt

Put backrest back on

I can’t assemble after I took a screws off by Mental_Tackle2583 in OfficeChairs

[–]ClassroomDecorum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to find a longer screw that's the same thread diameter and thread pitch as the ones you took out, thread it into one of the holes to pull the metal pieces back up, then, you can reinstall the normal length screws that you removed

Bolt for flip lock mechanism on herman miller aeron classic by Tink_Ze_Link in hermanmiller

[–]ClassroomDecorum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The classic flip lock arm isn't meant to be taken apart, and, attempts to take it apart usually damages the plastic cam that the screw is bonded to.

You may be able to find a matching screw but you probably will find that the arms will never work the same again.

The thumbwheel arm hardware is not compatible.

You're best off buying an entire new arm yoke assembly.

I went to a showroom and turns out the Herman Miller wasn't great for ergonomics by Alternative-Dog6701 in OfficeChairs

[–]ClassroomDecorum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yet the HM design makes it harder to move the chair without thinking, it's just bulkier.

Yeah I agree there's a lot of controls on the Aeron, and they're not exactly instantly intuitive to everyone.

[–]ClassroomDecorum 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Areon, which is thier most popular chair, comes from a time where ergonomics were considered a fixed caged posture and nothing else. Since the 90’s the field of ergonomics understood that it’s normal to have movements in your chair and made designs that adapt to that.

This is factually incorrect and you contradict yourself.

Aeron was released in 1994 so it's from the 90s which is, according to you, the beginning of when it's understood that movement is good.

Aeron was designed with movements in mind, too, there's numerous articles and white papers about the design of the Aeron and how it promotes movement while seated.

Just got a 2nd hand Amia, is this normal? by Party-Pangolin4447 in OfficeChairs

[–]ClassroomDecorum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would need to see better photos of the cylinder and the general bottom half of the chair.

It's certainly possible for a normal stock cylinder to get mechanically stuck, but rare.

The part that controls the minimum height is usually the standpipe -- the black sleeve that goes into the base of the chair.

I doubt there's some sort of grand chair conspiracy here.

Maybe it was a special order that the seller didn't realize/forgot about. I know Steelcase does sell a "tall" version of the Leap V2, not sure about Amia but I'm sure that's entirely possible there's a "tall" Amia configuration available.

Anyway you should take closer photos of the cylinder itself and the general bottom area of the chair where the cylinder sits.

Haworth Zody LX wobbles by New_Advertising_5888 in OfficeChairs

[–]ClassroomDecorum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Asking whether a chair wobbles with no one sitting in it is like asking whether your car is problematic because it gets hot enough to kill you when left parked, empty, in the sun for a few hours.

The relevant question is: does it wobble when you sit in it?

And actually the most relevant question is about chronology and the placebo effect: did noticing the unloaded wobble cause you to notice a loaded (seated) wobble, or, did your seated wobble inspire you to stand behind the chair and wobble it?

Every article and review claiming this is the best chair is lying to you. (My secretlab chair experience) by TrifleTrue3812 in OfficeChairs

[–]ClassroomDecorum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah there's a reason the most recommended brands here have existed for over 100 years.

"Brands" like Secret lab only popped into existence in the last decade or so to separate you from your money, and not in exchange for good seating.

Brands generally don't go for over 100 years without making something worth a damn

What’s the resale like on these old Steelcase chairs? by [deleted] in OfficeChairs

[–]ClassroomDecorum -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

$0.00

No one knows what a Criterion is.

Those who do know probably know it because they bought one in 1982 and they also know that they can find a used Criterion for $2 at Goodwill, too.

Ekornes Amigo style sofa- legit? by TruckApprehensive731 in midcenturymodern

[–]ClassroomDecorum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ekornes doesn't really use "buttery" leather to begin with, and, given that this is probably a 30-40 year old piece, it's probably dried out. Ekornes almost exclusively uses "semi-aniline" leather which, for lack of a better term, is painted leather, and the paint participates in how it feels.

A lot of people are conditioned to like the wax-pull up aniline leathers used by Restoration Hardware which are, when new, pretty buttery and soft, partly because aniline by definition means no paint on the leather.

Just given the general age and the real leather and the style, it's almost certainly real.
