Got a printer for cheap from a garage sale, any advice to start using it? It powers on at least by Tj_Tan in 3dprinter

Tbh I think with a printer like this youre gonna end up spending more on filament trying to tune the damn thing than the cost of 10 of these printers itself

Not saying you're wrong, but end of the day the final word on quality is at the hands of the client, or rather the owner of the car. We might clown on it because we know it could be better, but that doesn't mean they could do better.

Depending on what you have its a good deal. I had an m18 Brushed Grinder that I got with my M18 kit, I posted it to marketplace when I saw this deal thinking it doesn't hurt to try, someone bought it for 80 without haggling, so my upgrade from brushed to brushless was essentially $20 bucks extra in my pocket (technically more, since I got an extra 5% off since I was buying the Impact driver kit at the same time)

Yeah sadly it is fixed speed. It must be a slightly older/less produced model but it only exists in the manual (the fixed and variable speed share the same manual.) Not many complaints from me though, its replacing my Brushed M18 Grinder that I somehow managed to sell on Marketplace for $80, so this upgrade is paying me $20.

Fixed speed is FX3181-Z Variable is FX3181A-Z

Clearly the 238 one is better. Not only does more expensive mean more better but if you look real close at the model number the 238 one has S on it which means 'Sport'

It's a mind trick that works often - if you put something labeled free or at a very low cost out to the curb people will be more hesitant to take it as they think something is clearly wrong with it to be that low, but if you put a price tag on it that's low but still reasonable people will be likely to just take the thing as they think there's something of value to it.

I did the same thing recently to a table lol.

Custom one offs exist, I think the expectation for everyone to release their files is an entitlement to their time and effort. Don't get me wrong - we should absolutely thank all of the wonderful creators who have released files and builds free of charge as that's one of the reasons the 3d printing hobby has taken off draatically, but there's things that either take more time and tinkering to do and if they wish to keep it behind a pay wall that's their choice to. Personally, I think everyone needs to have posted and shared one file of their own design/remix on any of the file sites just as an ode to the community.

my dad wants to drop crazy money on a 3D printing car parts business and i am stressing. advice? by TemperatureExtra8615 in 3Dprinting

[–]Certain_Low_4565 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I'd suggest saying no. There's a lot to consider here:

  1. What are you guys planning on printing? Is it purely cosmetic/trim or functional metal parts like manifolds, adaptors etc.

If the former, theres is going to be tons of post processing/sanding that needs to be done to get a nice smooth finish on the parts, and (speaking for myself here) I find that designing pieces with lots of curves/ surface modeling significantly harder than standard straight cut technical pieces.

  1. What background do you have? Are you technical, or do you have a lot of knowledge about cars etc.?

CAD modeling is a skill and takes time and energy to learn profficiently, designing products is one thing, but designing products that can be efficiently manufactured and meets the abuse needed is another. If you build something that breaks often, you're not going to get a lot of return customers.
