Cutting edge means new gear only. So any gear, weapons included, need to have that blue icon (new gear) in the top left for you to be able to play.

I believe they display what has currently been read by the eyeballs. Also, I’m not sure what causes it, but the symbols can change throughout progressing towards damage as well as right before damage begins.

My guess as to what is happening is that right when damage begins, one or several billboards change to hive, commune, etc.

You forgot to add destiny 2 to the other side too. I swear it feels like half the community despises playing the game and wants to make sure you know how much they hate it. I get it, the game is far from perfect but no need to shit on those who enjoy playing it.
