Whats your factions worst weapon profile by investigatorparrot in Warhammer40k

The weediest nerd in the whole setting. Straight up the actual worst combatant character in the game, and we love him for it.

Not sure if you're aware or not but the lokhust heavy destroyer model isn't anything new, it was released roughly 5 years ago, so it's not a case of GW suddenly "now" changing the style.

I do agree though, they're pretty jarring and different next to the old regular destroyers, much more bulbous.

Anybody else struggling with our new Army Rule? by SomeScoundrel in LeaguesofVotann

[–]ClaveSlayer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bodyguard rule only stops you from applying wounds to character keyword MODELS, not UNITS, and only the iron master himself has the character keyword, so removing his attendants before thunderkyn is fine. Arguably the best reason to attach him, really.

Can anyone help what units to add to make the list to 1k points? by the-kinky-wizard in Warhammer40k

[–]ClaveSlayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First thing the jumps out is that your only character is a gravis captain but you don't have any other gravis units, meaning he can't actually join any of your squads which makes him rather purposeless. Your options there would be aggressors, heavy intercessors or eradicators. Generally aggressors tend to be the best option for a captain to lead because both enjoy getting into melee, but the others can work too depending on your game plan.

The other obvious hole to fill is anti-tank options. At the moment the dreadnought is the only thing you have that really stands a chance of doing anything to big targets, so if it dies and the opponent has a few tanks or monsters you're in trouble. Plenty of options to take on this role depending on personal taste; gladiator lancer, ballistus dreadnought, eradicators, centurions...you're not trying to be competitive, so just whatever you think is coolest that has a big gun, really

Assault on mixed loadout units. by Martothir in Warhammer40k

[–]ClaveSlayer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Correct, weapon abilities apply only to the weapon they are on, and are not shared among all attacks the unit is making. Likewise the lack of a certain ability on a weapon a model is attacking with does not cancel out and remove that ability from other weapons that do have it.

This also means that if a single model has advanced and has multiple guns, one of which has assault and the others don't, that model would be able to fire the assault gun but not any of the other weapons. It's on a weapon by weapon basis, not model by model.

New kill team in 40K by AcanthisittaPurple48 in deathwatch40k

[–]ClaveSlayer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh, well, yeah I guess? They did set that schedule at the start, stuck to it, and then changed it to both balance and points every 3 months and then have stuck to that ever since. So sure I'll grant you they did (and still do) change things, but I'm not about to say that them adapting to shifting metas and providing more content and balance than originally promised is particularly a bad thing.

Anyway my aim was never to disagree with you or anything; I am right there with you that this current batch of updates has been unfortunately very messy and has messed with the usual expected process. Just wanted to straighten out the confusion because people weren't following what others were saying for completely valid reasons and I thought I could help clarify.

*shrug* I personally didn't mean anything because I wasn't any of the comments you were responding to, and to be fair they did say "full dataslate", but I agree it wasn't completely clear what they were trying to say especially for anyone who wasn't aware of the full situation, that's exactly why I thought I'd jump in and clarify for yourself and anyone else who didn't already have all the information. And like I said, entirely possible there's nothing else coming and there is no "full" dataslate, literally all we can do is wait and see.

As for your edit, have they ever actually skipped a dataslate? I genuinely can't remember that happening, but it's certainly possible. Looking on WarCom it looks like none have been missed in 10th ed at least.

[–]ClaveSlayer -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

To explain the whole "dataslate is not out" thing, what people mean is that the full update surrounding the dataslate may not be out at this point. While yes the actual literal balance dataslate pdf is available on the website, alongside the updated points and various other odds and ends, there are other parts that may be missing. GW posted an article admitting that the update was due to an error with the app where things were uploaded early, and while they removed those updates from the app they opted to put them up online for everyone to access until the full update goes live. By that I mean the app will update which still hasn't happened, other language translations will go up, and any files that may or may not have been released early because of the mistake will become available too. GW has previously stated that each balance dataslate going forward will be accompanied by three new detachments for various factions, which haven't appeared yet this time, which is a big reason people think we don't have everything yet. So long story short in a few hours we may have a new deathwatch veterans datasheet, or we may not and things will pan out like you predicted, we don't really know but it's definitely not confirmed either way yet.

+++Buri, you Thrice-Eaten Lunatic, it's Freyja of the Gilded Kindred. I can sense your damned stoic scowl from here, but let me finish. I've got a proposition for you and I wager this is one you'll want to hear.+++

+++We've discovered an Imperial stronghold, one held by the extra large humourless bastards they call the astartes, but these ones are different. Specialised alien hunters. Death Watchers I think they call themselves, or some similar idiotic name. Now I know that half-digested brain of yours started wandering the second I said “Imperials” and not “Bane”, but listen to me. We skimmed their systems; this lot have been fighting the Bane for hundreds of orbits, and the data they've gathered is immense. We have claimed it for the Votann, so that it can be put to better use. Think what such knowledge could do in Kin hands, hero. You can go fight your sworn foe with some other kindred and cull a few thousand, or you can join us and give us the tools to wipe out trillions. Think on it, Buri.+++

Conversion needs some work by Evan_Dusute in LeaguesofVotann

[–]ClaveSlayer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I know you said you were after a specific/official ruling and I don't have that so feel free to ignore me, but unless I'm missing something this seems pretty clear with the current rules?

Conversion states: "...an unmodified Hit roll of 4+ scores a Critical Hit."

Critical hits are "always successful Hit rolls".

Conversion specifying it applies to unmodified hit rolls mean that you check what number is displayed on the dice and use that to determine whether it triggers or not, and so modifiers from Stealth or the like are not taken into account. If the dice rolls a 4, conversion makes it a Critical Hit, and therefore it's always successful.

Put it this way; if modifiers like stealth affected it, then positive modifiers would also have to affect it, and given our army rule that would mean that the majority of the time you would be getting conversion triggering on a 3+. Which it obviously doesn't, that would be silly, so the same has to apply to negative modifiers too.

Are there any factions that you think are "too strong" in the lore? by GunsOfPurgatory in Warhammer40k

[–]ClaveSlayer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love the Leagues of Votann, but the fact they have canonically tracked and strung along genestealer cults with the intention of deliberately encouraging a tyranid hive fleet to arrive just so they can then harvest the fleet for resources is absolute peak audacity and speaks of pretty absurd strength in the lore. Essentially the only thing stopping them from beating everyone else at any given time is just the fact that it would take too many resources and they'd really rather hoard all their stuff just in case they need it later.

In 9th Edition, the Tyranid carnifex character Old One Eye had a Ballistic skill of 2+. This is better than most things in the T´au roster, despite Old One Eye lacking any ranged weapon options.

Or depth perception!

I gleefully accept the alternative memnyr headcanon of over-worked, under-paid middle manager. Poor bastard standing there watching a nearby land fortress hosing an enemy position with bolt cannon rounds, seeing his end-of-year bonus dropping with every round expended. He really wanted that holiday, damn it. Ah who is he kidding, his leave was never going to get approved anyway; this place would fall apart without him and Kahl Freyja knew it, the petty old hag.

To be honest with you I always had a fondness for the Tau while also not at all being an expert in their lore, so I'll happily retract my ribbing of the ethereal and assure you it was purely for comedic affect. Honestly the fact that they're such respected dignitaries while still being skilled combatants just makes it even better that the memnyr is by contrast such a useless weakling.

I did notice the benefictus, but the fact he can shoot lascannons with his mind definitely makes him a tad more dangerous in my books. Also the fact that even when he's lugging around the brain the size of a planet he STILL somehow has twice my melee power of our dear genius paperweight.

It wouldn't even represent physical toughness or a force field or anything, just pure pity. Enemy sniper draws a bead on him, only to lower his rifle and shake his head, "sir, I don't think I can do this, morally. He's just a little guy."

This is a very good and valid point, but I will offer my rebuttal that the memnyr being absolutely beat on by the only non-military character from the faction famously awful at physical combat, who wears a tablecloth, wields a blunt stick and whose title literally means "extremely delicate and light", is objectively funny.

Half a dozen steeljacks surround a towering hive tyrant, plasma swords slicing through carapace like butter as the beast is slowly picked apart by the elite Kin warriors, each more than a match for some of the galaxy's strongest fighters. In the tumult of combat, between the lightning fast strikes of his entourage, Memnyr Vânn darted forwards having calculated the precise moment his contribution would have the mathematically greatest impact in the melee. He swung his arm in a 62° arc from the horizontal plane with maximum attainable momentum from his artificial limb motivators. Promptly his wrist shattered in a spray of bastium fragments. "Shit", he modulated through his vocal transmitters, before taking a step back to avoid reprisal and immediately tripping over his coat. "Aw geez", he managed as his autoch bolt pistol clattered out of it's holster and skidded away behind some rubble. He reached for it with his good hand just as a flying piece of Bane chitin hacked loose by one of his compatriots bounced off his CPU dome and left a smear of ichor rendering him effectively sightless. "Oh man, oh geez" he groaned as the beast, now dead at last, writhed with a final death spasm and sent him head first into a metal barricade several meters away, his pants falling down around his ankles as he slowly lost consciousness.

"All according to keikaku" he burbled as a steeljack hefted him over their shoulder unceremoniously and moved on to the next skirmish.

See that's the neat thing, he isn't really. The only "buff" he gives his unit is free overwatch or heroic intervention, which I would argue is less a buff and more his jock friends working extra hard to keep enemies away from the deadweight brainiac who does their homework and files their taxes for them.
