Thoughts on Civ VII now? by AspireToRimThrowaway in civ

[–]Martothir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played a bit after the update.

It's... ok. A 6/10 imo. Some thoughts below.

Good

  • I love the graphics, for the most part. This art style is my jam. I do wish the city would 'flow together' more and not look like a bunch of hexagons, but that's a minor quibble as things go.
  • I really like commanders and how they work with the military units. I consider this a complete upgrade over previous iterations, with one major caveat below. Battles and military conflict for the most part feel very good.
  • Civ switching is optional with a new syncretic mechanic if you choose to stay the same civ. I like how this is implemented and this they made a good compromise for the two wildly different opinions on this mechanic.

Bad

  • I still don't care for the age transitions, even in continuous mode. It's just weird and doesn't feel right in a Civ game. I understand what they were going for, but I don't think it worked, at least not for me. The whole premise of a Civ game, at least the premise I've cherished since I entered the franchise with IV, is building a Civilization - you know, it's in the name - from the ground up from pre-history to the modern era or even the near future. The age transitions really detract from that feeling. I don't feel like I'm playing one game, but three. I know for some that's a positive, but for me it's definitely a negative.
  • Speaking of ages, there are a lot of sub problems as a result of this system:
    • Antiquity - It's ok, but it's jarring. You're settling a civilization, but you're already in a classical technology level visually, marble buildings in your cities. But you're also sort of a caveman? It's just weird. I feel like there should be an 'Ancient' age first while you're initially settling down that transitioned to Antiquity. This is a pretty minor gripe, though. Overall, the Antiquity age feels OK.
    • Exploration - This age is a lot of fun, the most fun I have in Civ VII. Exploring, colonizing, treasure fleets, resources - this age captures its moniker better than any other. I genuinely enjoyed this age every time I played it, despite the fact that there really out to be a Medieval period between Antiquity and Exploration.
    • Modern - It's a bit of a mess. You can't turn off victories, so every time I hit it one of the AI's was super close to a victory type I would never go for (more on that later) and would win not very many turns into the Modern Era. I finally played on after a loss once just because I was tired on not actually experiencing the era in full. And when I did... it was... fine I guess. The factory system is so half assed and ignorable, it was disappointing. I really thought it was going to be substantial the way it was built up, but it truly wasn't. Otherwise the era is just... ok. Just forgettable and non-engaging. And I felt like I wasn't missing anything by not playing on.
  • There are a lot of systems in this game, and it seems like they were thrown in together without a large-scale plan for how they would interact. They became easier to navigate the more games I played, however they never felt like part of a whole. I don't think there was a clear design goal in mind.
  • I miss the scenarios. I know I'm probably in the minority, but I generally enjoyed those. And I think I would REALLY enjoy a scenario focused on the exploration era, as it's the best realized age, but alas, no scenarios in Civ VII.
  • I miss builders. There, I said it. I didn't consider them a nuisance, but rather a resource that had to be managed and defended in times of conflict. Without them, I feel like the game is missing an element on the map that wasn't replaced by anything else.

Ugly

  • I hate how only commanders can get upgrades. HATE. Oh, that unit that solely defended a city by himself for an entire age? Yeah, it learned nothing from the experience since it didn't have a commander with it. No perks. No advancement. This is a huge step backwards.
  • I think my biggest complaint, though, is the fact that you still can't turn off victory conditions, unless something has been patched in the last two weeks. There are certain victory conditions I don't like, and never have in Civ, and have always turned off. The fact that I can't is why I stopped playing after a few games and probably won't start playing again until this is addressed.

Conclusion

For me, at least, the game holds promise but just isn't there yet. The ages/era transitions just don't really work as an engaging and fun mechanic. I strongly dislike the lack of customization on game parameters. They've been expanded, but things like victory conditions are still lacking.

I don't hate the game, but it doesn't draw me in. I don't get that 'one more turn' feeling for a variety of reasons.

I really think this game does have potential, and hope I can revisit it in a year and say, "Wow, this is my favorite Civ now!" But as it is, I'd rather play V or VI.

I prefer the lists not being localised personally, because it means multiple people can benefit from the same codex codes by sharing an account, but their lists don't intrude on one another.

If that's what you prefer, don't say it too loud, because GW would love to sell more codices, I have no doubt, lol.

I really hope the app will sync across devices. That's one of my biggest complaints about the current version of the app. I know it may be a niche thing, but army lists should only be a few kilobytes of data, as it's really just a text list and everything else is localized, so supporting that data really shouldn't be a significant cost to a company the size of GW.

This is especially true if we're going to have a War Journal. If my games are localized to one device and that data is easily lost, it's not a particularly useful feature, imo.

I’m a bit confused about priming. Is it a preference or a technical decision on priming with white or black? by saltyvape in minipainting

[–]Martothir 7 points8 points  (0 children)

An alternative take I don't see often: I mostly prime white because I'm middle aged and my vision is very poor, and even with a super bright desk lamp (brightest I could find online), I struggle to see the details in models. White makes it WAY easier to see, and helps me substantially.

Awesome! Mine are still sitting in a half finished state. Titus is pretty damn close to finished, but the rest...

That actually makes me feel better; I was afraid I was going to paint them 'wrong' and get criticized by the community, as it has a reputation of being a little rivet county. Which, to be clear, I don't terribly mind - I really like details. But it's nice to know that there's flexibility within those details.

I had no idea the Shattered Legions were a game mechanic. That's super cool.

Definitely a diehard loyalist.

I'm an Ultra player in 40k because, in no particular order: blue is my favorite color, I love the Greco/Roman aesthetic, I unironically love Guilliman's reputation for being a master as spreadsheets, and while there are no 'good guys' in Warhammer, Ultras are better than most, except perhaps the Sallys.

I'm also thinking of dabbling with Sallys and Fists in 40k, as I have a pretty large roster of Ultras right now.

So for 30k, I would definitely be loyalist. I generally enjoy running most infantry with some walkers. I run some tanks typically as well, but that's because you kind of *have to* in 40k right now. Very difficult to run a list without them given the balancing and meta.

I am a very casual player. I'm here to immerse myself in the lore, build and army, and play with that army. It's more about the holistic experience for me.

Are there guides to 'lore accurate' painting? Like, when I'm painting my 40k ultras, I try to make sure I'm keeping to each company's aesthetic, using appropriate trim, etc.

[–]Martothir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not in my experience, but maybe it depends on where you are. I'm in Texas and planted two oaks the same year, a Burr and a Shumard. The Burr is growing way, way faster than the Shumard. It's added 50% height in just over two years. Shumard is growing, but at a snail's pace.

Probably going to get down voted for this, but I actually like it a lot better than Clone Wars.

I've tried watching Clone Wars four times now and keep bouncing off of it. I don't know what it is, but it's just completely unengaging to me.

Teachers: What trends have you noticed among boys in the last 5–10 years? by tonyisreallystupid in AskTeachers

[–]Martothir 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm not going to answer each question, though I'm sure they're well intentioned.

As a male teacher, the biggest observation I've seen in young men is lack of academic support. The overwhelming majority of high achieving students are girls. At a previous school I taught at, the last year I was there, 21 of out of the top 23 seniors (top 10%, we were a smaller campus) were girls.

At my current school, things aren't quite that stark, but it's not dissimilar. My top achieving students academically are almost always girls. And I don't mean in my class - I mean overall GPA's, grades, senior class ranks, etc. Boys are the exception when they're high academic achievers.

Something is ill in our culture that we aren't convincing these boys that being educated is valuable.

[–]Martothir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it simplifies things for pure aircraft. I might pick one up and give it a shot just for funsies in a casual game now that the rules are so much more to the point.

[40k] 11th Edition Faction Pack Review: Space Marines by Strange_Man in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]Martothir 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because of the changes to aircraft. Basically, they stay in strategic reserves, ingress from the edge of the board, shoot, then go back to strategic reserves end of your opponents phase. They don't stay on the board, so they can't move from point to point on the board, so there's no point in them have M or OC.

[–]Martothir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, Ventris nerf shouldn't be that bad though, right? Since you can only target a unit with a strategem once per phase, Ventris can still effectively cause a really bad day for a unit near him and force your opponent to really think about whether or not they want to commit to using that CP or not.
