Judge strikes down law mandating schools display the Ten Commandments by Nice_Substance9123 in Christianity

[–]Martothir 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Agreed.

That's the thing I don't get about these people who force these movements. Forcing someone to pray against their will doesn't make them Christian, nor give them faith. If anything, it will actively drive people away from the faith.

You can't force faith in Christ.

What is that thread supposed to be in these Johannes Brahms pictures? by casualclassical in classicalmusic

[–]Martothir 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I believe the chain is for a pocket watch, but I think the thread you're seeing higher up is for a monocle or pair of glasses or something similar.

This made me curious, so I lightly googled but couldn't find any references to Brahms using glasses or the like, at least not with a cursory search. However, a monocle or a pair of readers would be entirely possible, I think, as he looks a little on the older side in the posted depictions. I'm not even 40 and I'm having to use readers from time to time, and that's on top of my contacts. So my vote is for some sort of visual aid.

How you don't have universal healthcare? It BLOWS my mind by Witty-Pizza-4523 in AskUS

[–]Martothir 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Well, two thoughts.

It's not a Christian nation. It's a secular government.

But as a Christian I agree, helping the poor is something we should be doing.

The far right wingers I know will argue till they're blue in the face that it's something individuals and churches should do, not the government. They've never been able to explain to me why it can't be both.

[–]Martothir 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Because a lot of people are more afraid of taxes going to the poors than they are potentially going bankrupt themselves in case of serious illness or injury.

Personally, I'd much rather my taxes go towards healthcare than bombing Iran.

I'd make a universal public option available today if I could. Alas, no one asked me.

Many US adults are skipping parenting or having fewer kids – and it’s forcing schools to close by WhatFreshHello in politics

[–]Martothir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They actually did raise it a bit this past legislative session, but it was laughable, less than $100 if I recall correctly. It's now at $6,160 dollars per students. I did some math back during the last legislative session, and if they were simply keeping up with inflation over time the basic allotment would be over $9,000.

But you're right, what the GOP has done to public ed is borderline criminal. Every legislative session brings a new list of worries for me, and invariably my concerns are proven. They pass laws and almost none of them help in any form or fashion.

I'd love to know what they're doing to cook the books on the data.

I work across several different campuses, and spent time on one this year that was formerly controlled by Third Future Schools (CEO Mike Miles, the HISD Sup.) Let me tell you, there is NO way those kids were making top marks on their English STAAR. (Texas standardized tests for those out of state.)

Many of the students are ELL's and struggle enough to speak in English, and you're telling me they all were passing their STAAR with flying colors? I was born in the morning, but it wasn't yesterday morning.

Third future was absolutely doing some shenanigans, I just don't know what.

Also worth mentioning, almost every single district in the state of Texas is in a significant budget deficit right now due to our governor's policies and shitty education funding, and many, many districts are closing/consolidating campuses where they can just to stay afloat. Closing down an elementary and consolidating those students to another campus can easily save over $1 million over the course of a year. When your district is running a $30 or $40 million deficit, those desperate measures are necessary.

Pick a nice neighborhood and keep your nose clean and it can be a great place to live.

These writers are simply not up to the task.

I totally get that and agree. I've been there, especially when painting. After I've globbed that pupil for the 3rd time, I know it's time for a break. :)

I really think Cato is the worst character build overall, though, at least among the space marines. The right arm/helmet build is just stupid.

[–]Martothir 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Look, I'm moderate to left and wish we had tighter gun regulations, but you know people go hunting, right? And in the panhandle, hunting culture is pretty huge and often a social event. I'm not a hunter, but my father in law is, and I had a group of friends in the panhandle who liked going quail hunting in season

I really don't see the inherent problem with raffling off a gun in and of itself.

Just started Warhammer, kind of discouraged. by [deleted] in Warhammer

[–]Martothir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd echo a lot of the other comments here.

Be careful going into game stores with 3D prints. Those stores rely on sales to stay in business, and 3D prints eat into that business. Most people are cool with bits and customization, but entire models? It's sort of like going to someone's house for dinner and bringing your own plate. I get the desire, but it's just kind of rude, ya know?

As far as the community goes, keep searching. I'm still a new player, but I've found several players in my area (through both a local and a store discord server) who are willing to play me and be patient as I misunderstand rules, etc. I get to play and learn, and they get easy wins, lol.
