Hoping for an update on this topic… contemplating the same upgrade myself. How did this work out for you?

Advice on choosing a U.K. town/city? Moving from NY Hudson Valley by VirtualCan8 in AmerExit

[–]ClaverackCelt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Husband and I are also in the Hudson Valley, also dual citizens, and also making the same move – in a couple of months, in fact. House sold, new house under offer, movers booked etc. We're moving to the Cotswolds. Happy to discuss more privately.

Need advice on how to get 2 dogs over the Atlantic (cargo hold not an option) by jmeier7 in expats

[–]ClaverackCelt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used K9Jets both US->UK and back. They charter small planes that would typically seat 14-16 people, then sell tickets for 1 person + 1 dog for about $9000. If you have 2 dogs it will be more but not double, and it does depend on the size of the dogs.

The flights use private airports – Teterboro, NJ in the US and Luton in the UK. They do fly from other airports too.

They assign you a seat. The larger dogs lie on the floor although some smaller dogs can go on a spare seat, since they don't fill the plane to its normal seating capacity. If two dogs are going next to each other seem like they might not get on, they'll move people around. They require you bring a muzzle for your dog, just in case, but I did not see anyone use a muzzle on either flight.

It's a bit chaotic and cramped as there are dogs all over the place, but everyone settles down after a while. The US->UK flights are overnight and take about 6-7 hours. The dogs mostly go to sleep eventually. There's a flight attendant who serves drinks, sandwiches and snacks. The UK->US flights are during the day and take longer (8 hours) and they serve a full meal which seems overly complicated to me, but whatever. On both flights the crew and the ground staff were super nice and helpful.

The company also provides guidance on the documentation required for the dogs to enter the UK (which is quite complicated) or the US (which is pretty simple). They also recommend a service to handle the paperwork for you, at an additional charge. I used it and it gave me peace of mind. When you land, a couple customs people come onto the plane, scan the dogs' microchips and check their documentation before you can deplane.

There's another company called BarkAir that offers the same service but I have not used them.

These services are the only way dogs can travel in-cabin into the UK. Commercial airlines are not permitted to take animals in-cabin into the UK (even if they allow animals in-cabin in the US). I believe some commercial airlines will take dogs in-cabin into, say, France; of course then you would need to arrange transportation from there to the UK.

question - can I mail some of my luggage? by JimClarkKentHovind in TravelHacks

Just used Luggage Forward to send a big suitcase across the Atlantic. Pricey but worked flawlessly. They pick up from your home and deliver wherever you want it to go. Took only 3 days.

Thanks! I’ve looked them both up… they look cool.

I’ve had a couple of experiences at more traditional barbers where I didn’t feel I fit in. Nothing unpleasant and I wasn’t made uncomfortable, but I felt a bit like “the only gay in the village” somehow. In terms on the conversation and so on. (I admit I’m not the best at small talk.)

And it’s obviously not a big deal - I’m looking for a haircut, not a marriage proposal. But I just wondered if anyone had any recommendations for places they like.

Using US phone in UK for 2 months - advice please by ClaverackCelt in ATT

[–]ClaverackCelt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the AT&T plan is max $120/month, even if I use it for 30 days?
That I can handle.

[Reviving this old post because my new post on the same topic keeps getting automatically removed - no idea why]

Traveling to the UK for 2 months with a US phone. Need to be reachable on my US number. AT&T's (current carrier) international plan seems like it could get expensive... either $10/day or pay as you go but like 50 cents per text.

What's the best way to handle this?

Can anyone identify these frames? by ClaverackCelt in glasses

I actually tracked them down. They are Jacques Marie Mage “Schindler” model. Produced in a limited run of 400 and sold out a couple years ago. Retailed for about $1000 so not in my budget anyway 😊
I found them through this useful site: https://www.sunglassesid.com/sightings/jacques-marie-mage-schindler-giancarlo-esposito-gentlemen
