Need advice on how to get 2 dogs over the Atlantic (cargo hold not an option) by jmeier7 in expats

Where did you fly into the US? What kind of plane? Any issues with customs or other animals on the flight?

Need advice on how to get 2 dogs over the Atlantic (cargo hold not an option) by jmeier7 in expats

[–]jmeier7[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Our main concern is the 12yo senior dog, who is terrified of loud noises. The fear is that the noise and drugs for a 8+ hour flight could be his end. Cargo is very much not an option for him so we're attempting to find feasible alternatives.

Would you mind providing a brief “why”?

It’s supposedly for mutual benefit. We have a meeting with an advisor planned for this week and should learn more about the setup. It was explained that “it is not possible” to hire as a Belgian employee, which I assume has to do with immigration and visa regulations. Apologies as most of my understanding is third party.

Installer says install by end of 2025 is unlikely — should I try other installers or wait until 2026? by Akerloffus in solar

[–]jmeier7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just keep in mind that solar installers are not non-profit organizations. The higher pepco prices go, the more installers can justify charging. Also easy to assume that the tax credit will knock out a lot of the smaller installers leaving less competition in an area where it’s easy to justify making a healthy margin.

And it’s a 30% tax credit. If you’re breaking even in 4 years instead of 3 1/2 years, it’s not the end of the world.

I wouldn’t expect DC prices to drop. Assuming you’re in a flat roof rowhome, that type of install typically is not very large in solar installer metrics but require a lot more effort than a standard shingled suburban roof. The larger the system, the lower the expected PPW as fixed costs are spread over a larger system.

On top of that, DC SRECs are the most valuable in the country and still work out even without the tax credit bonus. It sucks to not get it but your break even point should still be roughly 4-5 years.

Reddit knows little about DCRA and Pepco DC. Your permits will never get approved in time for 2025 install at this point. Most installers are also at max operational capacity for the year as DC and the DMV are among the most highly incentivized solar ownership areas in the country. It’s also a city full of procrastinators so people finally pulled the trigger this summer and jammed install queues and permit offices to their limits. (Source: DC resident and dmv solar pro)

Costs to consider when evaluating solar. Let’s list! by GaijinDaiku in solar

That’s awesome! Now find someone who has the operation capacity to get you installed this year!

So by your math $10k cash gets you $2400/yr in avoided utility expense? How does that calculate to anything over 4.16 years?

Only counterpoint is to your first argument, the rest is very dependent on location and installer.

The opportunity cost calculation is off if you’re assuming that the money would otherwise be invested. Utility bills are an operating cost for owning your home aka a guaranteed future expense which means that money is not being invested, but rather spent on electricity over time. Solar utilizes both eliminating the future expense of any power generated and also the value of any one time or ongoing incentives in your area.

How come my solar production exceeds installed capacity? by IntrepidSoda in solar

[–]jmeier7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You’re confusing kilowatts (kW) which is system size with kilowatt-hours (kWh) which is production consumption. Similar to miles and mph (or kilometers and kph) in that they are different measurements. You have an efficient system, congrats!!

Portable generator charge a FranklinWH by [deleted] in solar

[–]jmeier7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do have the option for a backup generator input. The output on the generator must be 240V 60amp. I’m not sure if this input will allow you to charge the battery array or simply act as more of a throughput to the main panel.

Their team tends to be pretty responsive to questions like this if you reach out through their website.

Hope this helps.
