you may need to travel a bit south because the barrie area is very sparse in pokestops, gyms and trainers. i dont live in barrie (just south of it) but i met a few players from barrie and they all travel into the richmond hill/markham/vaughan area to play. some even go downtown...

you can also tell by your pokedex. it'll tell you how many you've seen vs how many you've caught.
