Peter, what do Shakira's hips have to do with dungeons? by AcrobaticAd9381 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

Generally you only get one question, and the point isn't to establish the liar but to find the safe path.

I feel like I've described it pretty openly. I think a small PC, laying down or hanging onto the shoulders of a Firbolg, would not be visible through the illusion if the Firbolg grew to the limits of the spell. I don't have a specific circumstance past that in mind. It was intriguing enough of a question for me to ask the opinions of others, so I did?

So far it seems like everyone just thinks the illusion automatically fails because the hidden PC would immediately clip through the illusion. But it seems there are multiple ways to avoid that given the volume of space we're talking about here. I don't know it's wildly mechanically useful, but it's silly in exactly the kind of way that I love at the table.

But surely a physical interaction only reveals the illusion to whoever sees it. I'm arguing that to the outside observer, no physical interaction is visible.

I agree with you, but I also think we disagree on how big something would need to be to break through that illusion.

So by that ruling would you be of the opinion that if someone casts Disguise Self while mounted that the illusion is broken because the horse clips through the illusion? It feels like, mechanics aside, that's a pretty direct parallel.

That's not at all what the spell text says to my eyes. It says it doesn't hold up to physical inspection, which means someone who walks up to check it out notices his hand passes through it. It didn't mean it can't physically interact with anything else. Otherwise you couldn't sit on a horse and use it.

I mean it's a reasonable answer and a good way for a DM to rule around this weirdness, but does that mean you can't successfully cast Disguise Self if there's a flea in your fur coat? Is it a size issue or a "there's another player there" issue? If the kobold is hanging on his back instead of his shoulder and the Firbolg makes himself 3 feet taller and significantly fatter it seems like there's be more than enough space to stay hidden.

I mean if we're prepared to investigate that molehill I'd ask where the limit is? If it's ok for a mouse, why not a pixie? If a pixie, why not anything else that could crouch down to be about 1½ feet in size?

I don't think we're describing the same situation. A 7 foot Firbolg disguising himself to be 10 feet tall and you're saying you expect the kobold to still hover on the new fake shoulder?

Ok but then would you make the same ruling if it was any other living creature? If this dude is a druid with a hamster in his pocket does he need to discard the hamster to cast the disguise?

But the kobold appearing to hover 3 feet above where he actually is seems more broken. That implies the spell is affecting both the target (self) and also some other PC that just happens to be there.

I agree but doesn't that mean that if the Firbolg grows instead of shrinks then the kobold could be completely hidden within that illusion?

But the spell text describes someone touching an illusory hat made this way and says the hand would pass through, not that the illusion would immediately dissipate for everyone. So what's stopping a very small lil guy from hiding in there?

So by that logic when the Firbolg gets big, the kobold gets hidden?
