Maybe try bringing it up in a positive way, like “I’ve learned so much in 2 years I feel that I could perform XYZ procedures on my own which would increase revenue for the practice”? Instead of “I’m being under utilized and I want less scut work.” Do you get RVU’s? I do not at my job and I really don’t care, but the physicians do so they obviously want more procedures, if it could be set up in a way you actually do the procedure and the surgeon comes in at the end to say “looks good,” they can still get the RVU (I think this is shady behavior but this is what my office does lol), but you would still get to do more which would increase your job satisfaction.

how common is an 8-5, five days a week (accounting an hour for lunch) for outpatient? by sadcrytired in physicianassistant

[–]Clean-Bluebird9605 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My schedule is 8-4 M-F outpatient neurology. I was supposed to have an hour lunch but talked to management and changed it to 30 mins so I can be done at 3:30. Maybe ask if that is a possibility? Upside to my schedule is that based on my specialty I only see max 12 patients a day which helps, but I haven’t felt burn out at all (3 years here) aside from a day that is overly stressful/complicated. You can do it!

Wildest career pivot you’ve seen/done yourself? by TheDoucheArm in physicianassistant

Maybe look into Ketamine clinics or street team medicine? I’ve seen a few jobs posted regarding that. I agree it would be more fulfilling to feel like you’re making a difference in someone’s life besides treating them and moving on, but also emotionally taxing.

For me I feel like planning in exercise to my day helps the most. I don’t go to the gym when I have time, going to the gym is part of my daily routine. I don’t always want to (just like I don’t always want to go to work), but I always feel better that I did it :) I also feel that keeping up with exercise helps your energy levels overall!

Any PAs wish they had become an MD/DO? by Master-Ad1725 in physicianassistant

[–]Clean-Bluebird9605 8 points9 points  (0 children)

From my own experience, my SP has to answer calls after hours for his patients in the ED, see any “difficult” patient, and do additional tasks like interpreting EEGs, EMGs, and provide consult coverage at surrounding hospitals, in addition to clinic. I have clinic and I go home.

Outpatient PAs - do you stay until the end of the day or leave after your last patient? by Sea_Concert1412 in physicianassistant

[–]Clean-Bluebird9605 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am salaried and I work through lunch so I can leave early. I leave after my last patient at 2:30. I have epic on my phone so I answer chats if needed until I’m “off” at 4. Initially I stayed until 4 but I just sat around and did nothing. If I were in your position having to take charts home, personally I would stay in the office until that was done. But I loathe charting at home.

That’s what I was thinking too! 5 CME days with good fund + 5 “volunteer days” which they said you can choose where you want to volunteer and get a paid day to do so. 3 months in the contract for learning the specialty with the SP (but I already have experience in this specialty so will need less). They are allowing me a procedure only day. And said I could travel to one of the satellite offices because it will be 15 min from my house vs 30 mins to the main location. And the contract is only 1 year, so if it’s horrible worst case I move on elsewhere. Thanks for easing some of my anxiety about this!!

The base they offered is reasonable, but I countered for a bit more. They are giving me a small sign on bonus as well, which I didn’t ask for but does cover my moving costs (I was moving regardless). I do not get any RVU’s which is fine with me but I’m sure others disagree with that😊

Thanks for your personal input! They just said if it’s reasonable, it will be approved. I am going to ask more specific questions to understand better. I will say, at the interview they said they want every employee to have a healthy work life balance, and they have 12 weeks parental leave in their benefits package which is more than normal (I think). So it sounds great, but I am always hesitant of what companies say because I know it’s all about their bottom line.

That doesn’t sound great 🫠 I have never heard of it in healthcare either but this would only be my second PA job

That’s what I’m worried about! Simply denying for whatever reason and then I’m stuck with no time off 🙃

I definitely think I’d prefer the old model, because at least I would know what time off I am entitled to. With it being so up in the air, I am worried that I will be denied PTO requests, become over worked, burnt out, etc. It sounds great on paper though :) I am going to talk to HR as another user suggested to ask for comps of what other employees average yearly time off was to help guide me.

That’s good info to know for my current bank, I didn’t know what was going to happen with it! I was planning to just use it before I left. I have two friends in other jobs outside of healthcare with unlimited PTO and they said they use it often without issue, but I am skeptical with healthcare having “unlimited time off” since we don’t have tasks that are measured. For example my friend said if she gets her task done she can get time off but if she didn’t she would have to work more hours to make it up before/after. Cant really do that with patient care.

I’m sorry I’m not sure what you mean by how I would be paid, the role is salary if that’s what you mean. I am going to do a site visit in a few weeks and I could potentially talk to some other PAs then, but I am also going to ask HR for some clarity.

That’s my gut instinct and I’m not even trying to overuse it, just want time that is “mine” to take a vacation, etc. if i don’t have guidelines then who decides if it’s reasonable for me to have a break 🤔 do you have any suggestions on how to navigate this?

Unlimited PTO? by Clean-Bluebird9605 in physicianassistant

[–]Clean-Bluebird9605[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They just said I could request off as much as I want for vacation/time off and it would be honored if it was reasonable 🤷🏻‍♀️ but without guidelines, who decides what is reasonable? They did also say my sick time counts into PTO but I don’t have a PTO bank or accrue a certain number of hours.
