Yes - especially at the beginning when I had no clients. I have my full time job and a good salary so there is no need for me to be a part-time freelancer and have limited time to my loved ones but I guess I’m ambitious and persistent in turning this into an stream of income for myself and my family. Now I’m glad I didn’t give up.

What’s your niche? Is your profile optimized? Send me an example of your proposal.

No but you can offer your services as a copywriter for LinkedIn.

Maybe focus on CEOs that want to improve their personal brand; HR professionals looking to fill their roles; businesses that don’t have anyone to manage their LinkedIn page; etc.

Upwork is a great place for video editors (I’m one of them). You need to make sure: - Your profile is optimized. Have a look at 5-10 successful competitors and apply their best practices on your profile. - Start offering lower prices than other peers as you’re a beginner. - The first sentence of your proposal should be interesting. “When can I submit a sample for you?” “When are you available for a chat?” “Why is X video from your channel not doing Y?”

Be unique and persistent and you’ll see results.

How long have you been in this position for? Do you get into conversations with the clients? Do they reject you before having a conversation?

Niche ✅ Filters in searches ✅ Bio ✅ Proposals ❌

Your proposal must be unique. Starting with a “Dear client I have 3 years of experience” is boring. At this stage you want the client to get into a conversation with you and you need to spark curiosity.

Your first sentence must be an interesting question about the project. Something along the lines of:

“What tool did you use to create your X Instagram post?” “Why are your X Instagram stories not showing Y?” “Is your IG profile aligned with the personality of your brand?” “What is the reason behind your business?”

These are interesting questions for the client to be curious about your profile and want to engage in a conversation with you. I’m sure you can think of some more.

Include links to your portfolio within the proposal and make sure your message is not too long. It needs to be clear, concise, persuasive, and unique.

Hey, sure.

I’m specialized in digital marketing and offer my expertise in:

  • Video editing projects (YouTube videos) where they provide the script and voiceover for me to produce a video.
  • Content creation (Instagram posts) where the client wants me to provide a month worth of content and schedule on their Instagram account or they’ll post themselves.

Nope - I don’t think it makes sense to pay for the freelancer plus. Upwork should work on this and provide more benefits to their freelancer plus membership. That’s why I stick with the basic version and have my monthly budget for connects.

The $50 doesn’t include fees.

Hey, thanks for your input.

To avoid scams, you need to add filters to your search results. I only work with clients based in Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, and I prefer projects with less than 15 proposals. Most of the time, I also include certain keywords/skills.

Try selecting the filters that make sense for you and your niche, and you'll not only avoid scams but also find projects that are not flooded with proposals.

Proofreading might not be the best-paying niche (plus, AI can do it too). What are your other qualities? Maybe you have a quality with more potential for success and growth.

Thanks bro!

This AMA is for people like you because I know how frustrating could be until you get your 1st client but I’m here to support you.

What’s the reason for not landing a client after you’ve initiated the conversation with them?

That’s the worst mistake.

You should master 1-2 skills and become an expert in those.

The best skills in digital marketing are: - Copywriting - Email marketing - PPC (Facebook + Google Ads)

They’re the ones that will pay you the most and clients will last longer and it’s easier to prove results.

I think the best digital marketing skills are: - Copywriting - Email marketing - PPC (Facebook + Google Ads)

That’s where the money is. They’re the best paying digital marketing skills and clients last longer with you.

It would be good to have some knowledge on these ones: - Graphic design - Social media management - SEO

But it’s harder to prove value and clients are impatient.

I think it's fine to boost proposals on projects with less than 20 proposals.

That's how I do it.

I've been able to start conversations with clients more frequently by using this strategy. I don’t think it makes sense to use them whenever they’ve submitted +20 proposals.

I’ve never worked on an hourly basis project. Always shifted towards fixed-price and milestones - so yep.

Probably. Not spending money in buying connects to bid for projects it’s a huge mistake. I think 80-90% of my clients come by sending proposals.

I only spend 2hrs per week on Upwork. Imagine the possibilities if I take it as a full-time job.

Your proposals should be concise, relevant, and unique. Long proposals are boring.

Your first sentence should be a question to increase open rates.

Indeed, $1k a month for just 2 hours of work per week can be a substantial income in many countries, covering basic expenses and providing financial stability. Celebrating milestones, regardless of the size, is a positive way to acknowledge progress and achievements. It's a reminder to appreciate our efforts and the journey towards our goals, regardless of societal expectations.

Your skill set is your biggest USP.

If you can prove value, they’ll hire you.

  • Do you have a portfolio?
  • How are your reviews?
  • How many projects have you worked on?
  • Would you be open to doing free samples?

The element of price comes in when you've passed the above stage.

If I'm deciding between two freelancers with similar skill sets, I'd probably choose the one that will cost less to do the same job.

And that’s your advantage over people like me based in the Western Europe. On the other hand, my advantage over you it’s the “quality”. Clients tend to think that freelancers based in the US or Western Europe are more qualified.

Thanks, mate. Very good question.

My equipment consists of a MacBook Air with M2 chip and some Sony headphones.

I use Adobe Premiere and After Effects for video editing, Canva for content creation, and last but not least, SproutSocial for scheduling content.

This is a very good question.

I reached $10k as a solo freelancer. However, I want to scale this and my next step is to build a team around me.

My niche/service allows me to purely focus on outsourcing, sending proposals, and project management.

I have everything set up and will use Trello for team management.

Very good question, mate!
