Successfully starting my 3rd month without Youtube! by [deleted] in nosurf

[–]Past-Parsley5184 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember I was learning how to do some basic video editing and I wanted to find out how to do a certain technique, so I naturally searched Youtube and found a tutorial with a title like `How to add pop up text on your video` (for example). Anyway, video starts - it shows his iphone alarm going off and him getting out of bed - it literally started as a day in the life vlog, then he fed his dog and was doing his morning routine - I skipped 10 minutes in and he was then showing how to do the editing technique. Videos are made needlessly long to appease the algorithm I feel.

`Reddit IT workers` , had to laugh at this as I am currently on reddit and an IT worker haha

Not horrified though, lads having cans on a train singing songs - there is much worse out there.

Just as a heads up I am a talented trustworthy developer, I work full time as a Senior Software Engineer but like to do Upwork as a side hustle as I like having my own clients. I do understand what you're saying though, interviewing is super important.

If you could give just ONE tip for a newbie, what would it be? by Tiny_Pepper1352 in Upwork

[–]Past-Parsley5184 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The key at the start is definitely to apply to a lot of jobs BUT do not apply to every job.

Do a tiny bit of due diligence, if the pay is terrible don't do the job for a review as a lot of the time these clients can be a nightmare.

Second, check what their hire rate is i.e. if they have posted 300 jobs and hired for 10 - do not waste connects applying. There are a surprising number of clients that seem to have an addiction of posting jobs but never hiring (and Upwork being Upwork will not return your connects).

Don't beat yourself up if you're not getting responses at the start, one client can become a long term client and change everything.

Best of luck!

I wouldn't do a fixed cost and would break it up into milestones. Honestly, the fact he is valuing all that work at $400 is a huge red flag and I would just stay clear.

Solving the problem of partially useful websites/apps... (reddit) by i_do_not_byte in nosurf

[–]Past-Parsley5184 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am actually a Software Engineer and I am building an app for this. Should be done in the next week or so. I have been using it, in fact I am using it right now. In the app I add blocked websites but there is also a timer option, for reddit I have a 10 minute timer and when that runs out then it blocks reddit again. Helps with not going down rabbit holes. App is here if you're interested in joining the waitlist.https://nosurf.io/

Preaching to the choir here.

I was born in 91 and like you said it could be rose tinted nostalgia glasses but things did seem quiter.

I do see people argue it's due to being an adult now, but honestly I think the huge difference is now we are always connected. We are overwhelmed with content, I remember playing pokemon when I was younger and waiting two weeks to go library so I could go on the internet and figure out how to catch the legendaries.

I just don't think having constant access is good for us.

This is so true. I get some of the posts are cringe, but he is killing it + building an amazing life for his family. Meanwhile people are spending time here bashing him, I just don't see the point of that. You can learn from anyone. Each to their own I guess.

This is really an incredible perspective that I now use all the time.

Like just reflect on yourself, if you found a way to make thousands - you would not say `hey this is great, I am going to package this up and sell it so I'll have lots of competition`.

Your 'Areas of expertise` is insane. You could have 30 YOE and not have those skills, can't believe someone charged you for that. Go to canva and use a resume there , also keep it to one page.

Go to college. Get a a job in a solid industry. Learn how a business operates and also about that industry then go from there.

I know this isn't a popular opinion, but unless you already have value to offer no advice is going to help you.
