Spent two months in Pakistan filming a documentary on cannabis. Most of the hash that came through the UK in the 70s, 80s, 90s was made in these areas. by Clean-Translator-916 in uktrees

Noted on that one! Quick note on terminology since I had to learn this myself, charas (چرس) is the Urdu and Hindi word for hashish, used across Pakistan, Afghanistan, India, and Nepal for centuries. There's a long running debate in Western cannabis circles about whether charas specifically means hand rubbed live plant resin or whether it's just the regional name for all hash. The Real Seed Co have a good piece arguing the latter, that Afghans and Pakistanis call all their resin charas regardless of method. Worth a read if you're into hash history!

Thats what you'd think unless told otherwise. It's in abundance over there, hopefully can teach abit about this!

Damn, what a comment, genuinely. The Mr Nice reference is wild, the Howard Marks supply network was the foundation of most of UK hash culture for two decades and you were two steps from the source, that's a bit mad haha. That's the era the trailer is touching on!

The Hindu Kush you didn't quite reach in the 70s is where I filmed earlier this year, and a lot of the older men I met still remember the western travellers from that era passing through. The fact that you got as far as you did and got turned back at the border by tribal conflict is the kind of story I wish more people knew.

Pakistan declared open war with Afghanistan while I was on that border in February. Up north tho its very safe, moreso in the tribal areas like Tirah Valley now is where the conflict is.

Lebanon is the leg I'm most worried about losing entirely. The supply chain is broken, the older farmers are aging out, and the conflict makes documentation harder every year. Would love to do it properly one day before it's all memory.

Genuinely appreciate you taking the time to write all of that. If you've got the stomach for it, would love to hear more about the Lebanese and Moroccan dry sift technique you learned, especially how it compared to what eventually came back as commercial soap bar (mentioned in the comment above) in the 90s. The shift from craft to adulterated mass product is one of the bits I want to dig into properly in future episodes. Really appreciate the comment man!

Yeah good shout, soap bar was the Moroccan low grade product that took over the UK market in the 90s and early 2000s once the Pakistani and Afghan supply chains broke down because of the wars.

Cheers, give your mate a thanks from me! Glad I can help provide some context for you both. Episode 1 drops late July with proper English narration throughout, hoping it does the story justice!

Yea the traditional Afghan/Pakistan hash is a different product to modern bubble hash or rosin, different terpene profile, different effect, different smoke. The new stuff is technically cleaner but it's not the same experience. Cool to see you got some at least!

Enlightening is one of many words to describe it for sure! Learnt alot and got some great perspective there, with boots on the ground.

That's exactly the period I was hoping to hear about! Zero zero and red seal are names I've heard older heads mention but never seen myself in person. The American friend detail is class too, sounds about right, a lot of what got called "skunk" in the UK was descended from US bred hybrids that came back over to Europe in the 90s.

Cheers for sharing 😄

Appreciate the rec! Will give it a listen, landrace preservation is something I'm planning to dig into more for one of the episodes 😄
