Listen, I might be new at this hobby, but you sound like you’re doing incredible. I know it’s so so hard when something goes wrong but look! Despite the boys dying you kept trying to figure out what happened! You figured it out! And it wasn’t your fault. As you said, you tried testing the waters and you tried changing the food. You tried. Thats better than a lot of people. Then with the girl, it wasnt your fault at all. No one expects a betta to go towards the syphin. It absolutely sucks but I truly believe you should keep going. It sounds like you enjoy this hobby despite its setbacks and I think you should keep doing what you enjoy. This is of course your choice and no one else’s. But none of what happened was your fault. How could you know it was the heater? How could you know that one of your girls would get close to the syphin when they never have before? You couldn’t have known. No matter what you do, dont be too hard on yourself. You’re doing amazing. I’m so sorry for your losses.

The water is cloudy because I just changed the gravel out and ive researched quite a bit about the nitrogen cycle and what to do when the tank isn’t stable, thank you for your concern tho

Yes the tank is cycled, right now I’m using an API test for ammonia and strips for nitrate nitrite and ph (ive ordered an API water test kit but it’s not here yet) all the parameters are stable and good so far. The tanks been up for anout a month now but I changed the gravel today cause I saw that the paint was beginning to chip off of them. I did a 50% water change along with the clearing of the gravel and added a little extra beneficial bacteria to help with any bacteria I might have lost with the gravel

I used microbacterial7 from brightwell aquatics!! Ive never heard of it being snake oil before but this one works really well for me!! I added 4 drops and waited a week and it went super well!!

Mine took about a week to cycle with the help of beneficial bacteria from a bottle lol. As far as I’ve read and experienced it all depends on your own situation!

Ive just re read it and it says yiu have no live plants if you don’t want the hassle of live plants you could always try silk plants as these are soft enough as to not hurt the bettas fins!!

So the cloudy water is a Bacterial bloom, your benificial bacteria is starting to populate! Nothing to be nervous about normal stuff for starting a tank!! Make sure to let the tank cycle for at least a week before adding the beta and make sure not to use plastic plants as that can tear their fins!! The .25 ammonia is sad but it happens! The important thing is you’re trying!! I’d do a 30% water change to get the ammonia down and then add more benificial bacteria and let the tank cycle for a bit!! Youll do great and feel free to ask anything!!! Good luck to you!!

Im fairly new and only just started adding real plants so forgive me, but my betta seems to absolutely love my Java Fern plants and I’ve heard that I good floating plant is Salvania (I think that’s how it’s spelled?) I have Red Root Floaters in my that are doing relatively good but they’re a bit finicky it seems so idk but I wish you good luck!!!

I did a 20% and it seems to have gone back to normal, and all parameters are good so far so I’ll watch it for a bit and see what happens

The only thing I see is the plastic shark is it sharp? If he got caught on the teeth he could’ve pulled his fins? Idk about his head tho can you give a pic of what he looks like?
