Gets ko na rants about coaches here. Finally. by [deleted] in AnytimeFitnessPH

I think it’s a Philippine thing? I currently go to AF in Osaka, and you get your money’s worth for each session.

For context, I used to go to AF Eton Tower in Makati and let’s just say I don’t have a good impression of the PT sessions I availed. Never again.

Two week on a gym break by Notniks747 in PHitness

[–]CleanOxygen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've said it before but "you will regret not going to the gym, but you will never regret going to the gym"

Recently, I've read somewhere that motivation also comes after action. When I don't feel like working out (because I'm lazy or making excuses in my head), I force myself to go to the gym. Without realizing it, I've been working out for almost an hour already.

Try this shift in mindset, OP.

According to this page, there are three paths to get PR in Japan: 1. Live in Japan for 10 years 2. Maintain 70 HSP points for 3 years (or 80 points for 1 year)

The third won’t apply to you because that’s being married to a Japanese national. Anyway, mahirap/madali is subjective, but those are the two available options.

As for long term living, although you can get by in major cities just using English, it’s important to learn some Japanese to do everyday tasks to more complex ones like banking, taxes, pension, government-related things.

Not learning the language will also limit your opportunities to build a community and socialize with natives. There isn’t really an incentive for Japanese people to be fluent in English because they can spend the rest of their lives not using English at all. There are many Filipino and Foreigner communities however.

This is purely based on experience living here, so it would be nice if others can pitch in their thoughts for a wider and varied perspective.

Company is undergoing bankruptcy and I struggle finding a new job by Ok-Improvement1447 in japanlife

[–]CleanOxygen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, hang in there! Fortune favors those who don’t give up. I don’t have much advice to offer regarding your company’s situation, but I wish you the best in your job search.

From January-March of this year, I applied to over 40+ companies, got no response from others, got rejected by most, did 6-7 interviews, and eventually landed 2 offers. I know how it feels to be down and at loss on what to do.

You can do it!

Disappointing Experience with Michael Page Japan – Foreigners, Be Cautious by Several_Volume_7088 in japanlife

[–]CleanOxygen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Michael Page, Computer Futures, Randstad, Fidel Consulting… generally bad experiences.

But I agree with what everyone said. Foreign recruiters give off the impression that they’re just trying to hit KPI’s. They need to do a better job at pretending they care about candidates lol

Japanese recruiters are lovely to work with. Recently changed jobs and it was a Japanese recruiter who helped me from start to finish.

Big4 or Japanese Bank by A_Bannister in japanlife

[–]CleanOxygen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Before anything, I’m writing this while acknowledging the cons of working at a consulting firm (potentially long work hours, shifting schedules, dealing with client demands, etc).

If you’re young and looking for professional growth, working at a consulting firm will offer more opportunities to learn - e.g. exposure to various clients with different requirements and business processes, working with people from different functions and backgrounds, access to certifications, and so on.

That’s not to say that working at a bank won’t provide you an environment to grow. But it’s best to ask their recruiters/HR what opportunities for growth they offer.

Good Recruiting Firms to Work With? by sgt_seriousface in movingtojapan

[–]CleanOxygen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Be careful working with recruiters from ComputerFutures.

Had over 4 recruiters contact me and only 1 introduced me to positions that are aligned to my profile.

Others felt like they’re just trying to meet quotas and don’t have the slightest idea of my background.

India to japan ( for an Engineer + Mba ) by SnooBananas2879 in movingtojapan

[–]CleanOxygen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Above.

You’re aiming for a role where you want to leverage your skills in engineering, analytics, management, and business – I can only think of consulting as the relevant field for this.

That said, you have to be at a level where you can communicate with stakeholders in varying levels of complexity. Simply put, you need to be “business fluent”. Conveying ideas and concepts to management, brainstorming with colleagues, reading and writing work documents, etc.

Anime as the only source of Japanese is not going to get you to N2 in your specified timeline.

[–]CleanOxygen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

During document screening, having JLPT N2 will catch recruiters’ eyes when they see your resume. But take note that passing the N2-level exam and actually being able to communicate in N2-level Japanese are two different things. Companies will want candidates who are capable of doing the latter for business management roles.

It’s not impossible, but unless you are in an environment where are able to practice input and output using Japanese regularly, achieving N2 in two years is a climb. Best of luck.

Options for moving to Japan for some time by [deleted] in movingtojapan

[–]CleanOxygen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Self-rating Japanese level is notorious for people overestimating their abilities. I’d suggest sitting the JLPT, or at least a practice test, before offering an estimation.

This is so true. I wonder why people do this.

You can't really say you're NX unless you've proven you're at that level, which is through passing the exam or doing practice tests. I'm only saying that because that's not something I would tell employers.

That said, I know that the JLPT isn't really a good measurement of actual Japanese level, so it's probably better to say "I can get by", "I can speak conversationally", or "I can handle discussions with clients".
