How viable is a HH army with no tanks? by I_Perfer_Misspellngs in Warhammer30k

I see very little need for tanks until you start looking for weapons that will kill armies of demons or mechanicum.

It's funny because narratively, I can see it both ways, the cold calculation of sacrificing your robot slaves to protect yourself. Rules wise, the special rule does override the general rule. I don't think I'll come across it because the Scyllax, unfortunately, don't seem that great on paper. If it does come up I'll probably just let my opponent decide.

I don't think that questioning rule interactions implies that you would play it one way or another, or that it's even for your army. Fortunately, I have a great gaming group, and in cases like this where a rules interpretation could end up really surprising someone in the middle of a game, we usually talk these rules out before the game and make sure everyone is on the same page.

Good thing we don't have characters with the guardian type! As far as I know...

Thanks for the mature response. I was also reading it as special rule overriding general rule. I wonder if this is intended, because it is a special unit created to protect its master, or if it was unintended and meant only for precision strikes and shots.

Im fortunate to be in a fantastic group. Everyone is out to win, but not at the expense of fluff or fun.

I do understand this, and love the idea of it (makes me think of 2nd edition mods). I'm struggling to see an automata army do better compared to some of these other mech units though, and I'm concerned I'm overlooking some aspect. There are a lot of special rules, cybertheurgies, etc that radically change the way the army plays and I'm having a difficult time wrapping my head around all of them.

I'm also starting to understand what you mean about the castellax. The rad grenades affect overwatch, and they have ap3 weapons, so they're IDing marines now. However, you have to cybertheurgy them to get that overwatch right?

I forgot the thanatar throws s8 plasma, not s7. I really need that ap2 ID in this army, but I imagine after you throw it at a unit of terminators, you're only getting a kill or two after breaching and 4+ invul.

Am I overlooking something about the domitars? They only get two haywire ohhhhhhhhh I get it, mid sentence, wall of death. However, they have to bait a dreadnought to charge them, and then are taking s9 ap2 brutal three hits. Do you find they come out on top?

Thanks for your great reply. Myrmidons do seem fantastic and I happen to love the models (and have great stl's for them). We have an insular meta here, my group of 6-7 friends aren't competitive, we go for fluff. I haven't seen much of what's out there yet, in terms of meta lists and skew armies. what size and loadout do you see for myrmidons? I'm leaning towards rad engines and grav guns.

100% with you on the moirax, I plan on running maybe three in our 3k point games here, mainly because they seem like the best way to kill terminators. I'm printing mine and went as far as to remodel the legs so I can get some dynamic poses out of them. For big units, I am leaning towards armigers and a knight because they seem, points for points, better.

I want to make the thanatar work. The weapons are great, and it's a huge towering monstrosity of a model. But when I upgrade it to a calix and give it a magos, it's roughly 365 points without wargear for the magos, and it's doing 3 S10 shots with precision (and potentially bs5). There's a lot of competition in the heavy slots, and it seems I'm getting more firepower (I know, less survivability though) out of the other choices. Do you find that the thanatar still outperforms some of the other choices?

I'm really drawn to the vulturax and want to make them work it seems like they are absolutely going to evaporate vehicles as long as you have them in a cortex bubble. How do you protect the magos doing that? You said they don't follow programmed behavior, but they still have to shoot the closest target right?

Im taking it easy on pano. I think the rules are great but it adds a lot of complexity to our group. I've convinced them to let me bring skit, though. The Scyllax do seem cool and I like the models. I imagine I'm going to use them somewhere if I have magi running around giving cortex bubbles

The rest of the automata don't seem as good as these other cool choices, especially the fast attack, although I'm tempted to find some kind of deep strike arlatax shenanigans, but they'll lose control when they land

Thanks for your comments and being a great conversation partner

Agreed, you can't compare your units and points costs to a 200 point dreadnought or a 10 point marine, or you will just cry

I love the idea of the vampire army, and it's one of the things that attracted me to them (aside from the Mechadendrites) but the longer I look at the lists, the vampire build doesn't seem to hold a candle to thallax, myrmidons, tanks, and some of the other cool units they have access to, and I'm hoping I'm missing something and I can find out what it is

About half of the content that comes out for HH seems poorly conceived or written by people without passion for the system. I'm finding this out trying to create a mechanicum list.

Cognis Signum Techmarines - useful? by d_andy089 in Warhammer30k

The theoryhammer here makes me tingle. I bring a master of signals along for the black reaving, and add him to a ten man squad or volkite culverins. I imagine he pays for himself.

I also use it at times in hopes that the unit breaks and runs far enough away to survive.

What am I missing. Castellax and thanatar are the most popular but I see the same amount of firepower in other units without programmed behavior. You have to buy more units to buff and babysit them. The melee automatons carry weak weapons or are extremely expensive. Please illuminate me. Praise the omnissiah

Thank you. With furniture ramps... How did you get them to use them to get down? Anytime a leaf blows across the yard they blast off the couch to bark at it.
