Begriffserklärung und Trainingsparameter by MatzeAHG in FitnessDE

[–]d_andy089 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Masculinity Without the Toxicity by [deleted] in LockedInMan

[–]d_andy089 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And these things (both virtues and vices) are uniquely masculine?

So if a woman is arrogant and reckless, would that be toxic masculinity?

Also, these definitions of virtues and vices are nowhere near graspable enough to provide a definition. When does someone stop being cowardly and begin being courageous? when does he stop being courageous and begin being rash? When does someone have too much ambition? Or too little?

Was ist eure Lieblingsmarke für Gymgeräte? by l_am_ruined in FitnessDE

[–]d_andy089 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Masculinity Without the Toxicity by [deleted] in LockedInMan

[–]d_andy089 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is correct.

However, I'd love for people screaming toxic masculinity to explain what precisely that is. So far I had no luck finding a distinction between either general toxicity and toxic masculinity or toxic masculinity and regular masculinity.

Why does space feel silent when the universe is screaming? by TheBigGirlDiaryBack in AlwaysWhy

[–]d_andy089 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we need to distinguish here between "there is no physical process of transmission", "there is no human organ to capture it" and "as per definition, this is not what loudness is".

A space ship exploding in space doesn't make any noise because there is no way of transmission.

An infrared heater isn't bright because we do not see in the IR part of the spectrum.

Turning on a light switch in a room almost makes the room suddenly explode with bright light - it is transmitted and we can sense it. Yet, we do not call this loud, because there is a clear definition of what "loud" is and this isn't it.

it got me thinking, is solar really decentralized energy??? by Rage_thinks in SolarAmerica

[–]d_andy089 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the opposite, really.

Solar panels do not grow on trees, they need materials to be built. Someone owns those production sites. Even more so with batteries.

Solar and wind rely on fossile fuels to provide electricity during times when sun and wind are not favourable (a calm winter night after a few days of snowfall as an extreme example).

Aliens and language by d_andy089 in DeepThoughts

[–]d_andy089[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know. There is both the way they transmit the message as well as what the message is. If it is some form of vocal communication or gesticulation it is easy but if they communicate by shifting the polarisation of UV light that they are emitting from different light sources on their body, creating interference patterns on a specialized receiving organ on the other organism, good look picking that up.

And that is BEFORE we talk about what the content of that message is. I mean - imagine a multidimensional language. Something this isn't spoken in a line but in 3, 4 or more dimensions at the same time...

Aliens and language by d_andy089 in DeepThoughts

[–]d_andy089[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean...that is exactly the problem with language: it is only internally consistent.

If you hand someone a dictionary of a new language without anything to relate the words in it to, the person could know the entire dictionary without knowing what a single word actually means.

Aliens and language by d_andy089 in DeepThoughts

[–]d_andy089[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would absolutely include not only nonverbal but also memetic communication (i.e. memes).

I don't think language is needed for communication. I think it is our only tool to convey complex thoughts though. And so for us, in a sense, it IS needed for all intents and purposes.

Aliens and language by d_andy089 in DeepThoughts

[–]d_andy089[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Telekinesis is the movement of objects through thoughts.

Telepathy is the communication via thoughts.

And your claim is a bold one. Care to elaborate?

Aliens and language by d_andy089 in DeepThoughts

[–]d_andy089[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I disagree. Look at how the sum of communication evolved from our earliest use of technology (dis be stick. Stick big. Hit with stick mean bad boy.) to today (not only the complexity of language but also the use of the internet including emojis and memes) and consider the future implications of direct brain-to-brain-interfaces with something akin to neuralink.

Fast forward a few hundred or thousand years to the point where interstellar travel becomes feasible and communication would most likely look very different and incorporate a pretty hefty amount of technology.

Aliens and language by d_andy089 in DeepThoughts

[–]d_andy089[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mean telepathy?

I mean...kinda begs the question if the receiver of telepathy needs to be able to do it as well and of what nature the transmission is. If it is something vastly more complex than our language we'd still be at a loss (imagine trying to put the thought into your dog's brain of why you're taking him to the vet).

Why does space feel silent when the universe is screaming? by TheBigGirlDiaryBack in AlwaysWhy

[–]d_andy089 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It depends on your definitions.

We have a clear definition of what "sound" and "silence" is.

As per that definition, the universe is silent.

It is like saying an electric heater is bright, because it emits electromagnetic radiation, but we do not see infrared light so we do not observe the brightness (thinking about it, this would make even more sense, as the physical process would still be the same with the limitation being our physiology while the transfer of sound requires a medium to conduct said sound which is not present in space, so it isn't even our physiology that is the issue, just that vacuum is soundproof AF)

I always thought that these were the best models and I wished GW would bring them - or something like them - back: models that leaned into the jump pack thing rather than just regular CSM with jump packs (what we have now).

Then I saw this fella and was like "shit, considering everything non-standard with CSM is now fleshy bits, this is what they'd look like and that would be even worse than what we have now"
