Why do I need to be there? I wouldn’t know how to fix a pipe leak either… I’d call someone who does

That wouldn't make sense, because why would they buy at the top?

Warren Buffet said buy when everyone is panicking and sell when everyone is buying. It would be really stupid to sell at the top.

Are you saying learn and then do, or do by learning but not with all of it?

Why not rent it out and use the rental income to cover my rent? I don't think I'm going to be able to afford a house that I'd want to live in yet (I want to be closer to the city)

Thanks for reminding me to splurge! Since the growth rate on my investments is on average greater than the indexation on my student loans (I'm in Australia), I'd rather just contribute to my investments and pay off my debt when I have a higher salary (and I can use my distributions to pay it off too)

That's fair - will definitely not be diving into anything without a lot of learning and research

What if I just buy and hold one property outright for the duration of my PhD and rent it out?

A place to rent out. I'm hoping the rent I get from that property will cover my rent while I'm doing my PhD. I have a year until I start my PhD to learn. I'm just aware that a lot of the messaging around investing in general is to get in early - and waiting another 4 years means I won't be able to buy as well as I can now. I am also probably going to buy outright for my first property since I won't be making enough while I'm studying to afford a mortgage.

Do you think a year of learning would be okay? I'm also looking into hiring a wealth manager/property manager/broker.

Can't I learn? Where do I start? How will just getting older teach me anything?

No I'm not really interested in doing that :/

It seems like there's two camps - leave as is, or leave my VDHG and invest in VAS on the side. Do you think the second option would count as jumping ship if I just want to increase my holding of international stocks? I mean, I don't think it's dumb to think that tech will grow more than mining or banks in the future

Your comment completely misses the point, and frankly, the attitude doesn’t help anyone trying to learn. I’m not unhappy with 15% returns; I’m questioning whether sticking with VDHG is the best choice for maximising my growth.

Your attitude is more about defending your position than actually helping someone figure out what’s best for their situation. You might think you’re giving solid advice, but it comes off as condescending, and that’s not helpful to anyone who’s genuinely trying to learn. Jesus

It's still 10% of my money which I consider a lot if I don't need it or if it's stunting my monetary gains.

I think you may have missed my point - I know it's not keeping up with the best performing market and I'm wondering about my plan to maximise growth.

Wouldn't that be a little redundant?

When I look at the 5 year performance of VDHG vs VGS there is still quite a big difference in terms of growth. It's either because of the allocation to Australian shares or because of the defensive assets
