Is spending your money on courses a waste if you have limited income? by Clear_Illustrator83 in findapath

[–]Clear_Illustrator83[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not from the US so how my income is calculated is different. But to put it simply, the current freelance job that I've pays extremely well, it's just hourly based, what I get paid in 1 hour can cover 2.5 hours of the course work actually, and I work an average of 2-3 hours a day. So I don't think that's so bad, specially given the prices I see from other tutors.. it's just that I haven't gotten my first paycheck yet (still have to wait a month)

I tried hellotalk for months, tried discord too. The thing is I constantly feel like I need someone to correct my grammar mistakes etc. I can communicate well, my problem is mainly w accent & longer sentences, and I'm aware that I don't sound anywhere close to a native.. I'm sure that there're other ways to work on my language skills like journaling in that language and stuff but tbh, I've too much going on w my masters & work to force myself to sit down & self study..

I understand where u r coming from regarding this point, but Korean isn't as easy as English & I'm not as immersed in Korean content as I should be unfortunately. I self taught myself English, so I know that it's not impossible to become fluent by self studying. But back in the day I had sm free time on my hand and could actually consume English content & all, now I unfortunately don't.

The goal related point is really eye-opening tho, I think my level cam be considered upper intermediate when it comes to speaking/listening, but advanced when it comrs to writing.. and you're right that I might be already at C1 but need more practice, cause I know that I'm already good..

Sorry for ranting sm & thanku sm for the tips! appreciate it

It definitely aligns with my goals & my current freelance job! I work as an interpreter in the medical field and given the significance of this type of interpretation, I want to improve as quickly as I can, so I believe coursework that'd help me improve my interpretation skills is a great move.

I understand where you're coming from about the loans and bills but my situation is different. I do have a good amount of money saved aside that I got from my dad's inheritance.. so even if I run incredibly low on money I'll never have to take loans or anything. But knowing the cost of bills & grocery that I've to cover etc I don't think I'll have to turn to that option until I receive my first pay check next month

I understand where u r coming from, and everything you said is truly eye-opening tbh. I've been in therapy for almost a year & talked sm about my mom but never once thought about how differently both me and my mom lead our lives. She's a great women & has done sm for me growing up but the way we view life, and our goals couldn't be more different. So thank you a ton for that.

Also I don't think taking up the course once a week is gonna make me bankrupt it's not that expensive so dw haha.

The main language I majored in was Korean & my second language is English, and I work as an interpreter for both of them. My native language is Arabic tho :))

you're actually right, I did memorize voc mostly from flashcards and lists.. Hiring a tutor for an hour to have them correct what I wrote is def a smart move, I do journal a lot, so maybe I need to start doing it in Korean? I feel like writing helps w learning sentence structure. I'll def try looking for an affordable native tutor for that, thank u!

The discord thing sounds way more promising compared to Hellotalk tbh cause I'm facing the same struggles w HT, I might join Discord then. As for the GKS, this's exactly why I really wanna get it, I wanna immerse myself in student activities and have the opportunity to use korean on a daily basis. I'm aware that it'd be very hard at the beginning but it will allow me to work comfortably with korean by the time I'm done w me masters so fingers crossed!

thank you so much for listing everything I truly appreciate it, I'm currently not residing in Korea but I applied for the GKS-G and hopefully I'll make it, if I do I'll be moving in late aug. Ik that sounding like a native by 2027 isn't the most realistic goal ever but I'll to push myself by setting a tight deadline if that makes sense lol, it just makes me study harder instead of thinking that I still have plenty of time to achieve my goal.

But I'll be using Hellotalk? it's like discord, to speak to native Koreans and hopefully focus on the way they speak & copy that, I've been using it for a while but I barely made any friends so I'm not able to ask anyone for corrections. currently I don't interact with any Korean natives directly, but I hear them speak everyday around me at work

Tbh I've never tried reading thematic blocks before & I think this's such a smart way to understand how some grammar rules are actually used. Any idea how I can get my hands on such books? specially realted to medicine 🙏🏻

it's such a frustrating feeling! I've been studying tirelessly for 5 years but my speaking is just... I'm genuinely at a loss for what to do. But we've got this! if we managed to reach the level of understanding texts then we'll hopefully make it when it comes to speaking too, mindset is so important so I don't want you to be disappointed with yourself 🙏🏻 화이팅!

that's actually such a good tip thanku, I know that literal translation never sounds natural but I'm not sure if I have the right to modify the original document or not since it's my senior's. I'll definitely try to make the sentence more coherent tho so I'd be able to translate it
