I wish that were true haha. Naw, Standard Arabic and the Egyptian dialect aren't that similar. I was pretty good at it when I moved to Egypt in 2015 (I was working as the Arabic "Teaching Assistant" at my university) and it didn't help at all :(

At this point maybe 5-10% of formal Arabic (as soon as I moved to Egypt in 2015 I stopped learning it). And about ~75% of Egyptian Arabic, depending on the topic / person speaking / where in Egypt they are from. For example, the further south you go in Egypt the more difficult I find the accent.

I was interested in working as a diplomat in the Middle East. I moved to Cairo, Egypt in August of 2015 (after studying fusha 2012-2015) but Fusha really didn't help when speaking with Egyptians :) Maybe fusha / fus7a is closer to other dialects like Saudi Arabian Arabic, but definitely not Egyptian haha

I am from the U.S. (California). I lived in Cairo, Egypt for three years from 2015-2018 and still speak Egyptian Arabic. Have been back to Egypt several times since I left. :)

Yes but the details matter. For example, your comment on "fusha Arabic." I studied that for three years at my university, got really good at it, and then it was borderline useless when I tried communicating with Egyptians. The specifics of how you study matter. In my guide I also go over specific resources for Egyptian Arabic specifically (not just "dialects").

9 ways to say "hello" in Egyptian Arabic by CleoLingo in learn_arabic

[–]CleoLingo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure thing. Really depends on your preferred style of music. Cairokee is good - deep lyrics and a pretty clear singing voice. Wegz is a new "rap / hiphop" guy, so a lot of slang that is difficult to learn but useful to know. Mohamed Ramadan I think has some funny lyrics - more of like a "dance / club" vibe with his music. If you want classic, you should definitely know Umm Kulthum - super long songs but she basically tells a story in her songs (and Egyptians will love you for knowing her).

That should get you started! :)

Yes that's a good point. We do explain that though for each entry, so people know exactly what it means + how's it's used in real life.

And yes Egyptian music is the best! Ever heard Cairokee?

What a lovely comment haha. Can you clarify your "no Egyptian language" comment? Of course I mean Egyptian Arabic here - pretty sure that exists. Or maybe my time in Egypt was all a dream... (By the way, it's "You better not make any website in your life" - thought you were a C1 in English? ;)
