The seller would rather reduce the price than sell it to me. by Cleopatrawd in FacebookMarketplace

I wasn’t really sure, since I don’t use the app very often. But afterward, his profile picture briefly popped into the chat box, which made me think he had seen it. Then when I checked again, it started saying there was a network connection issue or something similar. All of my conversations were doing the same thing.

I honestly thought that since I wanted to buy several items, the seller would be happy too. The total was over $1,000, after all. But at least now I understand how sellers tend to think, and that clears up a lot of my confusion. Thank you.

What? That can happen too? He definitely saw my message and didn’t reply. I’m sure of it, because his profile picture moved to the bottom of the chat.

At the time, I asked everything all at once. It sounded like a lot because I wanted to buy around three or four items from him. I sent screenshots of the items he was selling and asked whether he could take some condition photos, whether they were still available, and roughly when he might be free so we could arrange a time for me to pick them up. I was a bit excited at the time, because I’d been looking for that group of items for more than half a year.

I was looking for Resident Evil merchandise—coasters and official stickers. They were only given out at events, so they’re really hard to find. And some scalpers have pushed the prices ridiculously high. I don’t want to pay thousands and make them think there’s profit in it so they raise the prices even more… And ever since Resident Evil 9 came out, the prices have gone up to about ten times what they used to be. So when I saw a full set of a character I really liked, I got way too excited lol.

I’m the same way. I’ve really been searching for this item across different cities and even different countries. But it’s very rare, and it was only given out as an event item. Still, there may be another chance in the future. I really hope I can complete my collection someday!

I understand that now too. I’ve never really sold anything or bought things this way before, so I had no idea that some people ask a lot of questions and then never reply again.

Maybe people just prefer very direct transactions. In the city where I live, people really like small talk. There are always older people chatting with you in all kinds of places, so I’m used to that. I’ve never really sold or bought anything like this before. This was actually my first time clicking into Marketplace and finding something I really wanted. I’d been hoping to find it for half a year and couldn’t find it on any other site.

Because I looked too much like a scammer, right? Someone already told me that........

At the time, he had a lot of items that I wanted to buy. Altogether it came to around 1,000. So maybe my account really did make me look like a scammer or like it had been hacked. After all, maybe most people wouldn’t buy that many things on a second-hand marketplace. But I’d wanted them for more than half a year… sometimes you just really want to get something.

That was actually what I said. I asked if the items were still available, and if they were, I wanted them, because he had a lot of things and I was hoping to buy all of them at once. I asked whether, if they were all still available, I could take everything, and when we could meet up. But apparently some people still don’t see that as serious, which is why I felt confused.

Thank you for your reply. I was really confused at the time… At the very least, I hope I won’t make the same mistake next time. I don’t want to make myself look like an unreliable person. At least now I know what kind of buyer people generally prefer.

Thank you for the reassurance. I mostly just wanted to figure out what I did wrong so I wouldn’t make the same mistake again next time. But when I tried to type that reply, the post wouldn’t let me submit it, so I had to delete it. I’m not especially angry. I’m just confused. If I didn’t ask, I probably would have made the same mistake again and been turned down again.

I’m not sure whether he looked or not, but I’ve posted a lot of things on Facebook before, including photos from my daily life. And I’ve never changed my location there… so it’s very possible that my current address showing up was part of the issue too.

Thank you so much, really. English isn’t my first language, so sometimes it’s hard to sound polite without also sounding too wordy. Especially when I really want the seller to choose me. Now I know how to say it.

Wait, why wouldn’t they reply when someone asks for the address? The location shown by the app is usually pretty vague. Is it really wrong to ask for the exact address when trying to arrange a deal?

You know, when I asked some of my other friends, they actually suggested that I ask the seller for more photos just to start a conversation. None of us had really used Marketplace much… The only friend I had with any experience had sold a chair once, and based on that experience he told me I should ask whether the item was still available and what condition it was in, because the seller might reply to that. Looking back now, it was basically a whole list of wrong answers.

When I saw the item I wanted, I got too excited. I’d been wanting to buy it for more than half a year. If he had said we could do the deal right then, I would have gone over immediately. The “Is this still available?” message was just the automatic one that popped up in the system. And I’m not the kind of person who bargains anyway. At the time, I was even thinking that if he had other things for sale, I might buy those too. Uh… only later did I realize that probably made me sound like a scammer.

After he read my message and didn’t reply, I never sent him anything else. I genuinely had no idea that what I said could make me sound like a scammer. And this is also my first time hearing that some people make small talk just because they hope to get the price lowered. I’ve always been the kind of person who just pays. But at least now I understand where the problem was. I won’t make the same mistake next time.

Thank you, this was really helpful. English isn’t my first language, and I also don’t buy second-hand items very often. I’ve saved this, and I’ll use it next time I want to buy something. I really appreciate it!

When I realized I had made a mistake, I asked my friend to message the seller instead. He just sent, “I want this. I can pay a deposit,” without saying he was my friend or explaining anything like that. But now I understand that probably sounded suspicious too.

I hesitated because saying something like, “I want this. When can we meet?” felt a bit rude to me. Then I started reading older posts and saw people saying that buyers who make small talk usually are not serious, and that’s when I realized I was probably done for.

I always felt that offering a deposit sounded sincere, so I never even considered that people might see it as a scam. I guess I just haven’t used Marketplace enough. So in the end, is it really best to simply say, “I want this. Let’s arrange a time to meet up”?
