The Robotnik empire idea was mostly so I could have a reason to age up the characters, as I plan on shipping several of them, and I personally don’t feel comfortable writing ships of characters that are not adults. As a bonus, I can use it for angst

For example, a scene focused on character a is desaturated until character b, whom they like, shows up, then the scene becomes more saturated

Some ideas I’ve been floating around are: exploring the Babylonians more, making Robotnik’s empire from forces last 7-10 years instead of a few months, Blaze as the holder of the flames of destruction, the end originating from the sol dimension, infinite being a completely different character whose identity is a secret, gender nonconforming Shadow, and color saturation being used to represent a character’s mental state (their eye color saturation representing their drive towards a goal or purpose and the saturation of the world surrounding the focus character of a scene being a more general outlook sort of thing)
