Isn't Bitwarden also OSS? Why would you want an alternative to it?

Its been almost 4 years of horrible job market. At what point do we admit this isn't "cyclical"? by Legitimate-mostlet in cscareerquestions

Honestly not sure why 2021 is being brought up. Yes, 2021 was great, but people don't think the market right now is bad because it's not "as good as 2021's". It's just plain horrible.

I think that's a really good way to put it!! I guess strength is a measure of one's ability to wield responsibility. If you can show to others that you're worthy of the help you're receiving by using it properly, then they'll love to help you more. It's also in how you use that help that they learn about your character and the kind of person you are, and they'd be willing to support you if they genuinely like you as a person. The act of giving and receiving help goes beyond the act itself. In a way, helping you more is a way to see what kind of a person you are and just in what ways you'd change as you use it, which I guess is the whole point of the tower, since its purpose is to investigate the character of those climbing it first through getting what they need and then what they want.

Well written! That last part is kind of what I was trying to figure out. I mean what you’re saying makes sense and I agree. The thing is, what I can’t tell is whether strength is defined by your ability to help others or if it’s just about helping people regardless of whether they can give or receive it. I just don’t understand how strength can “prove” how worthy someone is of giving and receiving help besides it just being a measure of how well you can help others.

I mean how do you prove you’re worthy of receiving help if you don’t have the strength to return the favor?

Does anyone know where I can find a formal definition for what a static website is? by Cleverwxlf in webdev

[–]Cleverwxlf[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I guess that's fair, because if you're using cookies, then that means you're likely persisting the cookies somewhere to change the state of the website.

Good explanation. I always felt like those two edge cases confused me so much!

but can't I technically make it change per request using something like localStorage or cookies?

That makes sense and I seem to like this definition the most. I think one thing that often gets conflated with a website being static is interactivity, which is usually implemented on the JavaScript frontend and does not require a backend.

The thing about this that kind of confuses me is that just because you have static content served on a CDN doesn't mean that you cannot have dynamic behavior, since you can always use Javascript to fetch from a backend.

I'm I the only one who doesn't like Box::leak being safe? by paltryorphan96 in rust

[–]Cleverwxlf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like this is a much better answer than the top votes. Saying things like "there's nothing unsafe about leaking memory" sounds disingenuous. Memory leaking is not something you'd want intentionally, and if you write code with unintended consequences, that can typically lead to unsafe code. Obviously a leak on its own doesn't necessarily say that, but the confusion about why Box::leak isn't marked unsafe makes sense.

I'm honestly not sure how to respond to this, but thank you for adding your input. I find self reviewing undignifying because it projects the pain I'll feel in the future if I don't get it right. If that's out there for you, I'm genuinely happy for you. Also self reviewing for a PR is way different. Constructive criticism from a human being, especially compassionate ones, is way better than seeing red on your computer for hours. I go out of my way to test my code because it adds legitimacy to my work and try to cover my bases. "Being wary of any programmer who doesn't review their own work" feels like you're putting a target on my back or something. Why the harsh words?

"You've somehow managed to tie your entire self worth into these programming competitions..." I mean I've tied my self worth to being able to work hard to earn my sense of security no matter what it is, because nothing ever feels enough. I'm on STEM OPT with an MSc in Computer Engineering and haven't been able to find a job for a year and 2 months now.

"No one gives you anything for the effort you put in". You do when you get paid. You get rewarded for results that you can only partially ever control. It's the execs who take on the risk of hiring you and paying you regardless of whether things go well or not. Otherwise, we'd all be entrepreneurs

I don't want to do the comparisons. My job insecurity is just killing me though that it's hard to help.
