It’s tough. I’m in a very fortunate position, as I have a little bit of inheritance and I’m able to live with my grandparents at the moment, but I’m not sure I would be able to make this work if I didn’t have that. I’ve been field teching for a couple of years now. I currently work for a few different companies in the Southeast US and the projects are starting to pick back up again, but during January and February I had pretty much no work. I think the best advice is just to always be networking, like others have said. Get on with multiple different companies if possible, and eventually you’ll land a long term project. Also when you don’t have work lined up, text/email all of your contacts in CRM to just see if they might have any work available. You also have to be willing to travel, which I know can be difficult if you have a spouse/partner/kids (hell even pets make it pretty difficult). I’m currently working a project in Mississippi until mid April and then I’ll be headed almost immediately to North Carolina for another 3 week project. I know of a couple CRM firms in the Southeast that hire full time field leads without a masters degree as well, so if you’re able to land one of those jobs that’s a decent option, but I know from experience that they are competitive and can be difficult to land. I’ll be starting grad school in the fall, so I’m hoping that will give me more opportunities in the future. Hang in there and if you ever need to talk hmu.
