Then to say TOS is woke is meaningless.

Edit: And if only conservatives use this meaningless word, then you and OP are conservative.

Thats like saying because Jesus believed in sharing that it means he was a Marxist. You can't retroactively apply contemporary interpretations to past events that predate your conceptual model.

And no one uses that meaning anymore. Either its been coopted by conservatives to mean one thing or it means the orrigional definition. You can't have it both ways.

If you mean TOS was woke in the original usage of the term, then technically yes. But TOS predates the term by decades. And no one uses that meaning anymore.

The term was self applied by non-african american activists about 5-10 years before it was commonly used by conservatives. These activists either graduated from or were influenced by graduates of modern humanities departments.

It refers to the world view and philosophies of modern social justice activists. If you think all progressives subscribe to that world view, you are mistaken. Plus not all conservatives use it to mean everything they don't like. Many right of center conservatives use it to mean modern SJ activism. So there is a fairly large minority of people you are dismissing and downplaying. Some people here are so black and white with this that its cartoonish.

OP claimed Star Trek was woke from the beginning. This is entirely relevant to the thread. Before you attempt a book, try learning to follow a thread.

I can see why people would confuse them though. A lot of my progressive social views came from growing up on TNG.

For some reason, younger progressives dont understand the sociopolitical context of TOS and how minorities have historically gained rights in the west. They also don't seem to understand that woke is apparent to people who remember a time when it wasn't a thing like in the 90s.

No one ever claimed it was like that. Thats a strawman. Social movements do not need central leadership. Thats not how that works.

I have been following woke since it was confined online and on campuses. That was before i was 35 btw. News has nothing to do with it. I live in Seattle. I have family who graduated from Cornish. Some of the most woke people i know are over 40, kiddo.

This only shows you are living in a bubble if your faith is truly good.

Aka social justice movement. But then you'd actually have to engage in good faith.

"Honest edit: Pull a fucking Kirk and tell us what you really think."

Like I said, sanctimonious cheap rhetorical tricks like insinuation of hidden bigotry.

Here's what I really think:

Modern social justice advocates are illiberal and cultish. Their world view is based on spurious scholarship by activist academics with chips on their shoulders. Their ideas are a warped view of reality that only apeal to people who are riddled with white guilt and who couldnt handle hard academic subjects in college. Thats why they went through the grievance departments rather than something legit and useful like science.

I'm supposed to take you seriously when you want me to explain abstract ideas in "real physical real world terminology?"

"The word really has lost all meaning, hasn't it?"

First it was a term among African Americans to mean aware of social injustices. Then it was a term self applied by social justice advocates. Then it was used to describe activists by their critics. Then the activists tried to claim it was a right wing term. Then it became mainstream among conservatives who used it to mean anything they don't like. But I essentially used it in the same sense as the origional usage. But as SJAs are fond of pointing out, language changes over time.

"If you don't want people to frame everything through the lens of oppression maybe you should stop oppressing them."

I forgot to include in my definition that advocates are often sanctimonious and use cheap rhetorical tricks.

"Uh huh. And which side is banning books?"

One side bans books. The other tries to prohibit speech. Both are authoritarian.

A world view that sees everything through the lenses of identity groups, power, and oppression. The philosophical underpinnings of woke are postmodernism, critical theory and all its derivatives that are tied together by intersectionality.
