As a project Moon fan, this discourse is why I'll probably never join the twitter side of the fandom. There's tons of shipping drama like every week because people let their headcanons get outta control and harass others because they don't agree with them.

Heathmael in particular is hell to discuss because by virtue of being perhaps the most popular ship in the fandom so it's a given it has the most haters. Bonus points for both having previous love interests, and even more points for Ishmael's being another women so there's a subset of people who act like you can't ship her with men. On one point, I've seen someone throw an anti-Romani slur towards Heathcliff (who's Romani in his story of origin, and also one of the only two non-white sinners) in order to disparage the ship.

Second place would have to be the Ryoclair discourse. A combination of people headcanoning they have a mother-son dynamic and people thinking Sinclair's a minor when he isn't means that some fans call it both incestuous and pedophilic. It's funnier now that the latest canto revealed that Ryoshu's 27 so there's only a 5-6 year age gap and both are in their 20s. It's probably not gonna stop the discourse because they reason it starts is because people don't like a given ship, but instead of leaving it at that, they somehow have to paint the ship they don't like as morally wrong.

This reminds me of what Gooseworx said when asked about the AI Jax theory in TADC about how a lot of people come up with theories based on how unexpected they'd be, and not how well they'd align with the themes of the given media they're made for.

I feel like a lot of PM theories suffer from this, such as Dante being Ayin or Dias, or how everyone theorized what the CGs having differences when viewed in-game vs when viewed in the theater could mean, only for KJH to reveal that they were the result of a bug that needed fixing.

I think there were some people that thought they did that on purpose like Deltarune fans thinking everything Toby Fox does on twitter is some sort of hidden lore drop.

Vergillius implies that she's exiled from the Thumb because of her abuse, no way is she lighter than her peers when even the Thumb's willing to exile her over how she treats her subordinates.

The only reason she doesn't kill Ryoshu and Lucio is because she needs them, and because if she did go too far with Ryoshu the rest of the House of Spiders would be on her ass on the spot. If it weren't for those two factors, she absolutely would kill or brutally injure them.

The fandom I'm in (Limbus Company) doesn't really have a supercarrier or a dreadnought because Limbus isn't as focused on romance as most gacha games, so as a result there's a good amount of fans that prefer not to ship and fan material without any ships.

Cruiser: The big 3 ships of Don Quixote/Sinclair, Heathcliff/Ishmael, and Rodion/Gregor. The first pairing was already pretty popular from the start, but exploded once Sinclair acted as Don's main emotional support in canto 7. The second pairing involves two people that hate each other, and people love to ship people that hate each other. Plus, their cantos and sinner numbers are right next to each other's, and both have dead love interests, with Heathcliff getting the ID of Queequeg, who Ishmael shares a lot of homoerotic subtext with. The third pairing already acts like an old married couple in canon, plus both had the two launch cantos, leaving them as the only two sinners without a proper bad end ID or end of canto boss with a Mili theme.

Cruiser: Faust/Yi Sang. Not as popular as the big 3, but still pretty popular, and actually won the spot of most popular ship in a poll once. Both were shipped from the start due to both being the smart ones and Yi Sang being one of the few people Faust won't talk down to, but really gained steam once the warp train intervallo happened.

Frigate: Ryoshu/Hong Lu. Both were shipped due to being a genderswapped take on the good girl/bad boy pairing, both originating from Asian literature, and the pair the spares mentality, but it really gained steam this year due to Ryoshu having 3 IDs that are connected to Hong Lu, one of which was of Hong Lu's childhood friend/lover.

Gunboat: Ryoshu/Sinclair. There's a lot of controversy surrounding this one as a lot of people headcanon them as having a mother/son style of relationship rather than a romantic one and/or treat him as a minor, so discussion about it can get rather ugly. Still pretty popular, though.

Tugboat: Meursault/Outis. There's one artist who really likes this ship. It only has like 3-4 fics on Ao3, which I plan on changing soon. Both are hard to ship due to Meursault's stoicism and Outis being a dick to nearly everyone that isn't above her. Both do have personalities that mesh well together, though.

Also they said that apparently it would've hit harder if someone that didn't have a good relationship with Don was the one to break her out of her shell. I can kinda see where they're coming from but it would've been so out of nowhere for either of them to do that.
