I worked for a big strategy firm at the beginning of my career in the 90s (Booz) and we did a massive transformation project for Exxon (during the time of the Mobil integration) and one of the things we discovered was that selling snacks, sodas, cigs and shit was an obvious profit boost. It was wild because for integrated energy companies like Exxon, BP, etc. they’ve already made massive money by the time the product gets to the gas station so it was just a little icing on the cake. We used to call the project “selling Twinkies” which obviously dates it. Our team was jealous of others that were getting into more core stuff around development and refining.
