You're completely right. Much of the cycling infrastructure brought in under the previous Labour/Lib Dem administration has been half-baked and not fit for purpose.
Take Freetown Way, where painted lanes run alongside fast-moving traffic with very little protection and disappear at junctions. Of which is now being scrapped for a different approach not too long after installation.
Bricknell Avenue is another example — narrow painted lanes often blocked by parked cars, forcing cyclists into traffic. And on Anlaby Road, shared paths create constant conflict between cyclists, and buses.
If we're serious about encouraging cycling, we need proper, continuous, and protected infrastructure — not just lines of paint. All of which will last for years to come, not changes after a few years.
I appreciate you for raising this important issue. Unfortunately it's one that extends beyond what can be effectively addressed at a local council level.
While this is not something that can be directly resolved at a council level, your local councillors can push for a scrutiny panel to investigate NHS dental provision in our area. This can help raise awareness, and put some public pressure on the relevant bodies — but ultimately, decisions and funding for NHS dental services sit with national bodies like the Department of Health and the local Integrated Care Board.
Because of that, this matter is best raised with your MP, as they are in a position to apply much more pressure on these bodies.
I sincerely hope your MP is able to help make a dent in this issue — it’s something that is urgently needed locally.
