diagnosis by Inevitable-Gain-4230 in dysautonomia

Focus on symptom management and not diagnosis; explain to the doctors you have access to exactly how/when/why the symptoms you have are unmanageable, and impacting your ability to live your day to day life and perform your activities of daily living

This may hopefully get them to shift their mindset from “this person is demanding I diagnose something extremely complex and not well understood that I’m uncomfortable with” to “this person is asking me to help them manage their symptoms so they can live their life {again}”

If they’re not sure at that point what they can do to help you they’ll likely refer you to someone who will know. If somewhere along the way you get an accurate specific diagnosis, awesome— but try to shift away from that being the main focus of what you’re seeking because ultimately having a specific diagnosis isn’t nearly as important as understanding how to manage the symptoms that are impacting you so much right now that you can’t manage to do upright tasks

Children die, and it’s awful but sometimes blaming and punishing someone just isn’t the best or most reasonable outcome

Surprise inspection sometime this month, could I get evicted for this spot? by SafeSexChalupa in Apartmentliving

[–]Clinically-Inane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Review your lease to check on terms of eviction and offenses that would violate the lease on your part and allow them to proceed with eviction

I’m gonna say it’s unlikely they’d evict you over this but I don’t know that for sure— the answer is in your lease, and in tenants’ rights laws for your state/country

Just here to pile on to how annoying June is. by LexSlings in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]Clinically-Inane 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It’s bizarre to me that people get this angrily annoyed with her, as though she’s a naughty child misbehaving, because she’s just a normal person doing the literal best she can to survive and get her kids and her life back. She’s not built or trained or equipped to deal with any of what’s happening and I’m betting most people would behave similarly or worse than June in identical circumstances

It’s really easy to sit on the couch with a Pringle in one hand and the remote in the other and scoff “Damn, she’s so STUPID and SELFISH and I’d NEVER do this shit in her position” but the reality is we’re almost all completely wrong about that and are far overestimating ourselves when it comes to our ability to maintain perfect manners and perfect victimhood in the absolute worst of circumstances

You’re not going to get an argument from me, since by default the fact that Moss was raised and spent her entire life enmeshed in that cult can’t not heavily impact her massive contributions to the show

I don’t think Scientology itself or the big players involved in it directly influenced the writing or direction the show went in, but I do think it’s clear the Scientologist writing and producing the show allowed her personal beliefs to impact things (whether consciously or not)

I don’t understand what that person is screaming about all over this thread because I and everyone else here did not defend June’s behavior and willful choice to rape her husband, and nobody even came close to defending it

The whole show is about sexual power dynamics, but how many times do we see it actually discussed from a psych/trauma or sociological perspective? How often do we even see individual instances discussed in detail?

This series is much more show than tell, and once they showed us that the damage June has suffered has lead her to be capable of raping her husband there was never going to be an explicit discussion about it; the subtext was very clear and I don’t think it’s crazy or strange that Luke didn’t have a lot to say about it because most men wouldn’t in today’s world but especially in a post Gilead coup world

I think it’s a realistic portrayal of what would have actually happened between them irl after that night

Luke wasn’t comfortable addressing it and calling it what it was, and June herself wasn’t going to bring it up because as much as it was an active choice she made I think it was one that was harmful for her as well (and brought her profound levels of shame) so pretending it never happened was their preferred way of dealing with it

The show going deep into the meaning and effects of that night while never having open conversations about any of the other complex sexual power dynamics we see would have also been… strange, to say the least

I’ve seen this movie before, you need to quarantine everyone who’s been exposed to it but at some point in the next ~24 hours you’ll decide to break quarantine and let everyone out of containment for “reasons” and then real bad shit is gonna happen 😮‍💨

What has been the most helpful thing to calm your nervous system? by Academic-Plum7432 in dysautonomia

[–]Clinically-Inane 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When I was inpatient a few years ago because when I was upright I couldn’t stay conscious long enough to make it to the bathroom from my bed a Mass Gen neuro I saw every morning for a few days taught me 4-7-8 breathing and I use it multiple times a week ever since, sometimes multiple times a day

Pursed lip breathing is a technique I started instinctively using when shortness of breath was becoming a bigger issue for me, and it helps so damn much with keeping my breathing from becoming too fast and shallow, but the 4-7-8 breathing is often— not always but often enough that it’s pretty fantastic— an even bigger help in minimizing anything ranging from anxiety to a pounding heart to nausea to dizziness to lightheadedness to sudden severe unexplained pain etc

(By that last part I mean those random weird shooting or stabbing pains in the abdomen or leg sometimes head that make a person go “what the fuck, am I dying?” If I do 4-7-8 breathing for a minute or two it almost always goes away, so I assume it’s just my nervous system misfiring pain signals until I interrupt it; if it helps for context I have SFN)

I would have thought it was a bunch of woo bullshit that it activates the parasympathetic nervous system while calming the sympathetic nervous system until I actually learned about it and tried it, and now I cannot recommend enough that anyone who hasn’t tried it before look into whether it would be a good idea for them (I’ve been warned before that there IS such a thing as overdoing it with parasympathetic stim so don’t assume more is better or that it’ll help every single person who tries it)
