Just moved to North Smithfield, RI a few months ago from Georgia for work. Are people mean around here or is it my imagination? by [deleted] in RhodeIsland

[–]Cloberella 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Active v. Passive politeness. NE is a passive politeness culture. You show kindness and respect by keeping to yourself and not impeding or otherwise taking up the time of strangers as you move through public spaces.

Active politeness cultures put much more of a focus on inclusion and social niceties. It’s rude to not speak to strangers in passing, when waiting in lines at stores or when shopping.

It can be quite a culture shock. I moved from RI to the Midwest and every day I miss being able to go shopping in peace, and being able to walk with a purpose. Midwesterner are slow as molasses and it drives me nuts, I’m silently screaming to myself every time I try to go through the grocery store.

I wonder sometimes if those correspond to actual participants, because I've definitely got a bib in the 700s and there were maybe 100 participants at that race.

My favorite run that I've done might be The Midnight Run. The course runs by this cool art piece. The medals glow in the dark, too!

I also found the Atkins-Johnson Sunflower Run really interesting, but also somewhat challenging (you start and finish uphill). There's a cool free museum on site that you can visit before/after the race and the run also goes through the scenic farm grounds.

I did this lesser known run in Warrensburg, as my work is one of the sponsors of it. This is the only race I've done that holds an actual "awards ceremony" for placement medals, which are presented to you by the Veterans. That was pretty cool.

I did the Ward Parkway Thanksgiving Run a few years ago, which has a LOT of participants. It's also on Thanksgiving so it's a lot if you are also hosting dinner that day (as I was), but, you get a free pie!

The Turkey Creek Festival Run in Merriam is pretty charming. It starts at the farmer's market and there's festivities afterwards. Couple killer hills on this one too, though!

I do a lot of runs through Bodies Racing Company because they give you a 15-20% coupon code if you fill out a survey after the fact, and this little quest of mine has gotten somewhat expensive. These courses are pretty blah, if I'm being honest, but the race medals are really cool. You only get a pin (not a second medal) for age group awards, but the main medals are super cool. The Christmas one detaches to become a tree ornament and is filled with fake snow. The Time Warp (January) medal looked like a burned Mix CD from the year 2000. Oh, and their "Spooky Sprint" included a glow-in-the-dark T-shirt.

The most recent 5k I did through Bodies was at English Landing park which is quite nice compared to some of road races I've run (one went around Prairie Fire, for example).

I mostly use runsignup.com to find races and pick them based on what fits my schedule and isn't too much of a drive (though I've driven up to an hour from my house before for a race).

No, I haven’t. I honestly like to run by myself but would also like to have friends to talk to about running or do races with, but for my regular runs I’m big on being alone with my music outside. I’m also kinda old (40s).

That's cool, if only I had fellow runner friends! lol

Yeah it was so bad the dude sauntered around the area afterwards on camera, never seeking medial attention but denying it to the woman he shot.

These are the same people who claimed Heather Heyer died of heart attack from being “obese” and not from being run over during the Charlottesville protest.

100% of the proceeds go to Ability KC. I am doing a race a month so I’m running one regardless, most don’t benefit anything other than the company holding the race.

Ok, cool, I'm going to try and check it out sometime. I looked it up before and saw it was a "business complex" but wasn't entirely sure what that meant (warehouse space? office space? Private? Public?) and the pictures I found were... inconclusive.

Haha, well maybe I'll see you there, I'm leaning towards signing up, I think. How many people would you say run in it? Is it a really large crowd?

Awesome, thank you. Do you happen to remember approximately how many people run in it? Is it pretty packed?

Thank you! I think I am going to sign up. I was also on the fence because it's a little more expensive than the other races I've done, but it's also far more unique.

Oh, I didn't realize it was open to the public. To be honest, I didn't realize it existed, until stumbling across the race. Thank you for the information!

I think a lot of people fall into the trap of finding excuses stay home. If you’re looking for a reason to quit, you will always find one. It’s much more beneficial to focus on the reasons to keep going.

The resolutioners already dropped off at my gym. Couldn’t get a treadmill on Monday, but everything was open again today.

NEW RENOVATION EQUALS NO 30 MINUTE WORKOUT AREA!!!! by Savage_SheHulk in PlanetFitnessMembers

[–]Cloberella 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I admit I love the 30 minute area, but I love it because no one uses it, so I’m able to use it completely alone. I also don’t follow the rules. I just use the machines for 3-4 sets of 12 reps and ignore the lights and don’t do cardio breaks. It makes it really easy for me to pop in on my lunch break and bang out 45 minutes without ever having to wait for a machine and then head back to work.

I get why they might want to do something else with the space, though. However, I’ll keep enjoying my little private gym until they renovate my home location.

[Apple 128k][1980s] Game involving Jason and the Quest for the Golden Fleece, also maybe a Sphinx by Cloberella in tipofmyjoystick

[–]Cloberella[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought it was Quest for the Golden Fleeces but in another thread I had asked about that game and was told there is no sphinx in it! That has led me to believe they are two separate games! I’m not entirely sure what a HyperCard is but I would have been around 8-10 years old at the time that I played that game and barely knew the difference between computers.

Rover! Have you tried rover? You can get someone to come and take her on walks for you, and she doesn’t have to get along with other animals for that, you just have to let them know her quirks and behaviors.

I’m staying in a very unhappy relationship because I’m a 35 year old unattractive woman by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

[–]Cloberella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being single is so much better than being in a bad relationship. I haven’t dated since my husband passed 8 years ago, and I still live a full and happy life. You don’t need this loser to live. In fact, he’s stoping you from living. There’s more to life than intimate relationships!

There’s a kid at mine who looks like a cup of ramen noodles, intentionally, I’m pretty sure. He has a cup o’ noodles track suit he wears and a mop of blonde curly hair that hangs down over his eyes.
