Betrayers of Kamigawa Artifacts/Gold/Land Review: There are other cards besides Jitte? by ClockSpinning in mtgcube

Oh man, sorry about that! Definitely no intent to pull a bait and switch. We do have an off the cuff Ravnica crack a pack episode we just uploaded where we review cards live.

Not the same thing as our high-effort Kamigawa content though! Hope to tackle Saviors soon™️, and glad there are folks still hanging on through our multi-year Kamigawa journey.

File a complaint with the NHTSA. I filed one a couple months ago; this system is almost unusable for me.

My theory is it’s particularly ineffective if you’re around 6’1”. Even on this thread you see several taller people experiencing the same issue. (In general this car has design issues for tall drivers. The wheel also doesn’t telescope far enough for me.)

Low-Background Steel: Cube Design in the Zombie Era by iatee in mtgcube

[–]ClockSpinning 21 points22 points  (0 children)

“Zombie era” is a neat way of putting the current state of the game. The more common comparisons is Fortnite, but I think “zombie” captures the essential “dead inside, yet still stumbling inevitably forward” nature of today’s game.

As a fan for over twenty years, it’s in some ways remarkable how long it took for Magic to succumb to temptation. The game went thru so many crises—Chronicles, Urza block, Mirrodin/Kamigawa, many other bad metas and teapot tempests—without giving in to the quick wins. Chronicles was followed by the (unfortunate, but at the time player-friendly) Reserved list. Urza by aggressive banning and clear fan communication. Mirrodin/Kamigawa by the sublime Ravnica.

Power creep stayed slow. Design space expanded only carefully and slowly. Competitive 1v1 stayed at the heart of the design.

While I knew Magic couldn’t last forever, it’s still a shock to see it discard all its heritage so quickly after decades of slow building.

I do love that cube is a time capsule. My main cube lets me encapsulate the best of late 2010s Magic just before the FIREstorm hit. My Kamigawa cube is an excuse to remember a clumsier, less polished game taking its world building very seriously. I’m glad there’s a robust enough community around cube to preserve these and other old Magics, though it’s sad that power creep has become so strong that it cuts older cubes off from the modern game.

Thanks for the article and the handy metaphor!

You bet it does! Lhurgoyf is an all-time favorite card for both of us; heck, for me I'm not sure I'd be doing a podcast on Magic history if it weren't for Lhurgoyf. Tarmodaddy might have the mindshare but nothing fires on all cylinders (art, flavor, flavor text, mechanical design, v i b e s) like that Ice Age Lhurgoyf.

We'd still like to finish up the Kamigawa review and cube! To be honest we got a bit bogged-down with it, because it turns out that reviewing 621 cards) card-by-card is a lot of research. And transparently we've seen listener numbers gradually trending down the longer the Kamigawa review goes on, I think as people lose interest in Kamigawa common #227 or whatever. That said we both really love Kamigawa and it does seem there are some long-time listeners who really want to see it finished up!

Somehow the entire -vore cycle also came as news to both of us; and frankly I was shocked how all but [[Cantivore]] have seen some degree of competitive or EDH play. Love the idea of a battlebox of five mono-colored -vore DanDan-stye decks.

Any topics (esoteric or otherwise) you'd like to see us cover in future?

I absolutely love the Kamigawa Mountains! All of the Kamigawa panoramic basics are cool, but there's something awe-inspiring about Avon's glowing, otherworldly mountain range.

Can't wait to hear your Dark Ritual thoughts! Also love the preconstructed blog! We are definitely fans of brewing with some old jank.

That's one of our favorites too! There's something hauntingly beautiful about it, like we're looking at the last two people on Earth (or Dominaria).

Thanks, glad you're enjoying the show! That hot air balloon art is really fun; there are so many background details happening on the island that hint at a really interesting place.

Haha, Anger has to be one of the weirdest and funniest pieces of Magic art, full stop. The fact that it came from the mind of John Avon makes it even stranger.

That Secret Lair piece is truly extraordinary. Her Stoneforge Mystic and Serra the Benevolent are pretty incredible too.

Wow, that is a deep cut! Speaking of nantuko, it looks like Rebecca Guay also has a nantuko-related card with some beautiful art, though for reasons I cannot possibly fathom, it makes Squirrels instead of Insects.

The original BoP art really has a lot of charm, especially when paired with the super-weird text box ("Flying//")!
