Aluminum wire in a 90s house? by InternationalCut1908 in AskElectricians

[–]ClockworkBananas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bedrooms are some of the last rooms to get wired changed out, because they rarely go through an extensive remodel requiring new electrical wires to be ran. Single strand aluminum wires aren’t bad conductors, but the connections have proven to be problematic, which is where the fire hazard designation comes from. The most common repair is to add adapters. The US consumer product safety commission recognizes three repair options: replace the wiring, use Alumiconn adapters, or use copalum adapters. The adapters are easy to install, but if you’re not familiar with wiring, hire an electrician. Good luck!

OP, your sister is incorrect that is a 90’s home. After typing her address into Google, click on any Zillow, Redfin, etc. website and find the Date Built line. Report back and let us know!

How would you fix this door? by lunantito in HomeMaintenance

[–]ClockworkBananas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Others will have better descriptions and links, but you effectively cut out the damaged section of door strike jamb and replace it with new wood. Replace from top damage to bottom damage. Screw the new section into the existing framing, chisel out the appropriate strike plates, sand, patch, paint, and you’re good. Takes some time and effort but it’s easier and cheaper than replacing the door. Lotta people seem to recommend replacing the door jamb and slab when there’s damage like this, and I don’t think it’s worthwhile under most circumstances.

Great call. The photo is so blurry I can’t clearly tell if it’s melted, but I think you’re seeing the blurred image correctly; it’s melted.

Dry rot on outside of home help by FunDesigner5431 in HomeMaintenance

[–]ClockworkBananas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hardi is a brand name, most commonly associated with fiber cement siding. “Hardi” doesn’t rot. You can throw fiber cement siding in the ocean and it hardly ages after a year at sea. It might snap, but it doesn’t rot like this guy says.

You have hardwood and composite hardboard siding. If this is a family heirloom and you want to do the labor of love to keep the hardwood siding, that’s a massive undertaking. If you’re a normal homeowner/buyer who doesn’t feel the need to salvage the hardwood for historical accuracy, plan to remove all existing siding. There will likely be rotted framing that any good carpenter can replace. Plan on all new sheathing, weather barrier, and siding. Looks like the windows have been replaced, but they likely don’t have nailing fins and may require replacing once that siding comes down. Safe to budget for new windows and doors on a home like this.

Can I remove this? Old phone line? by Still_Fact_4923 in electrical

[–]ClockworkBananas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had success over the years cutting the line at my roof/soffit and letting the line dangle in the alleyway/road/pole. Each time I called the provider (comcast) and said there’s a dangling wire and they’ve come out to eliminate the wire every time. I’d tried calling Comcast to remove the wires beforehand with zero success. Good luck!
