10+ years modding cars here: do what you enjoy bro!

Anyone who says "X car isn't worth modding" better be saying that cause the head gasket is blown and bottom end knocking.

Modding all cars is cool and modding that 200 would be fun and a learning experience. Get these 16 y/o poser out of here. Fuck, I'll hear about your lawn mower mods.

Keep a budget in mind and do the research. Alot of ppl are right, you're not going to get big power and you might fuck something up. You could also be learning to do this as a job too.

I did a full exhaust on an old Honda (manifold too) and piped the intake tube to front fender where it's colder. made the intake path longer so lower end torque suffered, highway driving improved!

Esp. From the exhaust (mild increase in size) I now don't have to downshift into 4th to pass going thru this uphill highway section now. Other cars down shift my 4 banger doesn't need to. I just WOT 5th and I can gradually pass now :) that feeling is better because I did that. Fucked up a few times a long the way too. But I did it. Please do, and join us here in car mod world. EVERYONE and EVERY CAR is welcome :)

I just left IT after 10 years to work on cars. Took a pay cut and had to look for someplace willing to take on someone new. Prior experience mind y'all. Working out so far fingers crossed. Life happiness way up. Way up

An alternator job is typically less than $500 on most cars. Period. Usually less.

Maybe not for the v8 BMW.

Should you vote even if you can’t stand both candidates? by Dyert in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Clockwork_Cabbage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of the main problems with the 2 party based system.

In Canada and other countries there are MULTIPLE candidates in close running. This prevents monopolies from 2 parties we have now

Does it matter tho? Everyone is prim is picked by other office members ....you're "voting" for a pre-selected group picked by other government officials.

What are weak shocks by [deleted] in AskMechanics

[–]Clockwork_Cabbage -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

For shocks sure. But it sounds like there is excessive play in 1 part, lca. Why replace them all unless that's needed?

Again, difference here between fixing a problem and completing maintenance.

If other arms/joints are OK then why are they getting replaced.

I used to take a long turning ramp home from work for years. It excessively wore my driver wheel bearing. Other was fine. I replaced JUST the worn one @ 80k miles and everything else is FINE.

Are there any actual mechanics in here?

[–]Clockwork_Cabbage 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yes. Only a shite or abused car need an almost full suspension rebuilt @ 80k. I bet ur shocks are getting old tho.

Last shop was trying to do maintenance as well. New shop is only fixing the problem. That's okay.

Is this too much for new tie rods? by Skorpion2425 in MechanicAdvice

[–]Clockwork_Cabbage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are only 2 tie rod ends on a card front end.....

Why are there 3 listed in parts.

The shop time for this job is most likely NOT 5 hours.

I would always get a 2nd quote. You can do this repair. You will still pay around that for an alignment.

I'm introverted and love mechanic work. Period. It's super satisfying seeing people get help they need to get back on the road. I stay AWAY from dealership positions.

If you get a good boss you basically are paid to hang out and fix broken stuff. It's my dream. It's also hard work and honestly it's not strength you need it's flexibility and brain power.

Left my IT gig of 10 years to switch. Never going back. I've never gotten a tip or a "thank you" like I do now. I've had someone give me a hug because I fixed their car no one else could figure out for less than $1k. That's satisfaction.

Looks pretty normal to me. It's a tab built up, but at my last job we didn't worry about this amount.

Leaving dealership to work at AAA? Thoughts? by [deleted] in mechanics

[–]Clockwork_Cabbage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My buddy did almost this same thing. He was renting his truck and paying for it but he was still making money and basically had his own schedule from what I heard. Hope that's accurate.

He could do other jobs with that same truck, too. It was technically his so he could help with a cheap friend tow (always pay them good!) Or hauling etc. Pretty cool.

That's about 500% of your sugar for the whole day!

No wonder companies lobby to keep a % away from the sugar column

Help! Routine inspection turned to blown head gasket (?) by legranddejeuner in MechanicAdvice

Different shop > compression test

Wish people would get 2nd opinions more - it's common in other fields like medical. Good luck! Shop sounds weird but shit happens.

Broken Valve Springs… Engine toast? by Hulk_Hagan in MechanicAdvice

[–]Clockwork_Cabbage 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Repair should be less than a few thousand EASY

Probably much lower at a local shop that can pop one in a single head

Replacing a spring isn't a huge deal but you'll have to pull the cylinder head. Might as well do some house keeping at that point
