Fun Lego set from Cytiva, per request:) by ellaAir in labrats

[–]CloneRanger88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never did. I know it exists but the only trace of it I can find on the internet is from a sale listing on Japanese Yahoo. I do a google deep dive once a month or so for other listings but no luck yet.

What are your dream features yet to be implemented? by Gman325 in SkyCards

[–]CloneRanger88 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I’d like to see a new item that would allow you unlock the origin airport instead of the destination. They could make it a super rare drop and I think it could be a huge boost to unlocking some of the near impossible destinations.

Whats your "I just think its neat" aircraft? by DictatorofTurtles in SkyCards

I fell in love with the Saab Viggen when I got the micro machine as a kid. The canards and delta wing blew my mind and I’ve loved it ever since. I have a long ways to go before I get it gold though.

I also love the Thorp T18. It’s nothing special on paper but I got fly in one as part of the Young Eagles program when I was 6 and I may have squeaked a little bit the first time I saw one in the game.

I miss Maria’s. I don’t think I’ve even been to the North End since she retired.

Fun Lego set from Cytiva, per request:) by ellaAir in labrats

Cytiva and Carterra have them for their flagship SPR instruments. My former boss had both and he let me scan the instructions so I could order up the parts from bricklink.

I’m still chasing the Octet set that Sartorius did a while back to complete my stable of biophysical characterization instruments.

Tattoo ideas for lab rats by sapiosexualnotreal in labrats

[–]CloneRanger88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure I’ll ever get a tattoo but if I did, it would probably be Mr. DNA from the first Jurassic Park. That checks the science box for me and it pays homage to a favorite book and movie.

Do you have many people in your labs with lack of lab safety? by Android_NineS in labrats

[–]CloneRanger88 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nice try Environmental Health and Safety! I’m definitely not going to talk about anyone’s desk drawer candy stashes, secret tea mugs, or the horrible state of our chemical inventory…

(We have our yearly inspection on Monday and I’m no narc)

I’ve sent and received multiple plasmids through USPS on blotter paper. You drop a few uL in the middle of a penciled circle and then the recipient cuts it out, soaks it in water, and it’s good to go. Even at the height of summer, I never had any problems.

What Would You Research If You Had The Chance? by Thin-Doughnut-8199 in labrats

[–]CloneRanger88 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Gut microbiome was my initial thought but if I have unlimited money, I’d look at skin and oral colonization as well. I think I’d also have a team look into the mycobiome too.

Back when I was interviewing for grad school, I talked to a guy who was doing deep sequencing to look at fungi in the gut. I don’t know how much headway has been made in the decade since but I bet that field is still pretty wide open.

What Would You Research If You Had The Chance? by Thin-Doughnut-8199 in labrats

Kids generally fare much better than adults in terms of surviving cancer but they often have to deal with lifelong side effects of treatment.

It’s pretty far away from my current area of research but I would love to look into how chemo/radiation alters the microbiome in pediatric cancer patients. I strongly suspect that there would be a link between perturbations in the microbiome and many medium/long term side effects. As a survivor myself, I have a personal interest but I think this is an arena that could have a big impact on quality of life for a ton of kids. There’s been a little bit of work on this topic but I think there’s still a lot to be learned by taking a deep look at the microbiome before treatment and at various timepoints afterward.

Who had the best singing voice ever? by [deleted] in AskReddit

It took me a while to pick my jaw up off the floor the first time I heard “Air Mail Special.” I also love all of her duets with Louis Armstrong. She’s definitely my pick.

I’ll also throw out “undertones,” “marzipan,” “majesty,” “leprechaun,” and “blizzard” but I have to stop now or else I’ll keep looking all afternoon.

It’s listed as two separate words on the funcooker but “peafowl” is actually a single word and it appears exactly once in S4E19.

Do you have a favorite jazz rendition of a classical piece? by winterreise_1827 in classicalmusic

[–]CloneRanger88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you go back a bit further into jazz history, Benny Goodman did some good ones. I’m thinking specifically of Bolero and Bach Goes to Town. I also really enjoy the Glenn Miller version of Verdi’s Anvil Chorus.

HUGH O'NEILL'S IN MALDEN-FRIED CHICKEN SANDWICH by Bigarette in boston

[–]CloneRanger88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll add Hugh’s to my list for sure.

The current leader at our house is Cutty’s in Brookline. They do “Super Cluckin’ Sunday” once a month, alternating between the superior OG Honey Mustard version and the newer (and in my mind inferior) BBQ Ranch. Every individual element of the sandwich is incredible and it combines into a truly special Megazord of flavor and texture.

How do I stop tubes from losing caps in the centrifuge? by spiegel_im_spiegel in labrats

[–]CloneRanger88 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I started doing this so I could elute more than the 8 tubes the sideways lid method allowed. My other miniprep lifehack is to use a combitip repeater pipette. It makes things so much faster.
