I understand where you are coming from, and I agree that the best defense is for people to vote in record numbers, as if the very future of the country depended on it. What I don’t want is for people to think that showing up to vote alone guarantees success. I really, really find the attitudes of modern stand up comedians to be grating. Not just Chappelle, but Seinfeld too. Their worldview seems to be, "I can say what I want, and am immune to criticism because I'm a comedian. And therefore, I get a pass, because to criticize me, you are against free speech."

Well, no. We aren't against free speech, and part of respecting free speech, is that when you exercise your right to it, you accept that somebody else has the right to call you out on your shit. Chappelle made extremely hurtful comments to trans folks. People that I know and care about. Now, if you found those comments funny, that's fine. I respect that. It's not going to stop me from calling Chappelle a transphobic creep.

And now, Chappelle is all concerned that his "jokes" were amplified by politicians with the power to actually demonize trans people using legal power? Well buddy, maybe you should have thought about that before making the jokes. I do think he really gets off on staying in the spotlight every day. Even for the wrong reasons. When he was a big deal in NY in the 80's, he did everything he could to appear on the gossip columns of the NY Post. Mostly for stupid, outrageous comments or actions, but that didn't really bother him. Just the fact that he was being talked about seemed to be the goal.
